#Toaster for 3000?
18 messages in this thread
Anybody know if there's a 3000 version of the Toaster yet? I'm thinking
about joining a video friend of mine in a production setup ( he has a
toaster/2000) and want to be able to do work at home on my 3000 without
buying another 2000 with a 68030/HD/RAM/etc to run the toaster.
Any info is appreciated.

While it's not a toaster, you might consider getting GVP's IV-24 board for
your 3000. In the near future GVP plans to release software that will
allow the IV-24 to function as a switcher, and it already is a really nice
board for video work. It includes 2 comp ins, 1 y/c in, 1 RGB in which can
be configured as YUV or E-E (don't ask me what those are, I think they're
high end video formats), and it also has 2 comp outs, y/c out, YUV out,E-E
out, RGB out (that is if you get it with the transcoding VIU (Video
Interface Unit).
One major reason I could see to do this would be so that your system could
complement your friends machine instead of just being redundant. I'm told
that the paint program that comes with the IV-24 (MacroPaint) is much
better than the ToasterPaint, although never having played with a toaster
I can't really tell you.

What I need is to be able to create Lightwave animations at my home and
then be able to port them to his studio for single frame recording, so that
pretty much ties me in to a toaster. Thanks for the info on hte GVP
though, I've been drooling over that for a while. I bought a Firecracker a
few months ago, and I've been pretty happy with that.

I too have a Firecracker. As a matter of fact I have the RGB output of the
FC24 going to the RGB input of the IV24 so that I can get deinterlaced
output from the FC24. At the moment it doesn't work as well as I would
have liked, but that might be because I have an earlier rev of the IV24
and really need to send it off to GVP to get it updated to be fully
compatible with their video interface unit (a coil on the board needs to
be changed).

Actually, I need the Toaster so I can use the Lightwave software, as that
is what the guy who owns the video lab has based is studio on.
BTW, Creative Computers has factory refurbished, fully warrenteed Toasters
for only $1800…and that is the 2.0 version!
Douglas:
Well, that's up to you, if you NEED a toaster, then nothing else will do,
it's as simple as that. For me, I'm gonna stick with the IV-24. With some
of the new software GVP is going to be coming out with for it, I think
I'll be real happy with it, not to mention that systemwise it's whole lots
more compatible than any toaster ever was (or will be).

It's too bad Newtek doesn't release Lightwave independently of the Toaster,
then I wouldnn't need one….
There was an ad in the latest Toaster User or Avid (sorry, I forgot which)
for a thing called the 'Toaster Cozy'. It looks like & box & power supply
that sets on top of the 3000 & is about the same size. The Toaster goes
into the 'cozy' instead of the video slot. There was a jpeg image of the
unit in one of the Amiga DL libraries here.
Jim
Jim,
I believe it also supports a second video card too, no?
wmc
Wayne,
Yes, the ad mentioned something about a second video card. I didn't quite
understand what they were talking about though. The wording of the ad made
me think that the second card was some card they were producing or knew
about that would be available later. (Rather than just any ole video slot
card.) Of course, they could have meant that the ability to run two cards
would be available later.
Jim
Doug-
I don't have his CIS ID# handy, but ERIK FLOM, who frequqents this forum,
has installed a Toaster in his 3000. I don't know if just leaves the case
off the 3000 or if he has modified it, but you might want to drop him a
note (GO DIRECTORY) to search for his CIS ID#.

Thanks, Michael, I'll do that!
Doug, Although not officially sanctioned, Toaster2.0 works fine in an
A3000. You do need to nibble the case in the back alittle to get those BNC
connectors clear, but if you are at all handy, it makes a great system. I
have a Toaster running in a 3000 along with a Mercury 040 board with no
problems. This is probably the limit for the powersupply which is really
the only thing you need to watch out for. You can get the pwr supply
beefed up if your particular setup needs the juice or headroom. I just
have a real hard time justifying buying a 2000, HD and controller,
acclerator,
RAM, etc for a 2000 when you can get the whole works alot cheaper in a
3000. By the way, I've been told that the case cutting does not void your
Commodore warranty (if still active). Newtek has continued to support us
despite the 3000 configuration. I don't think they are moving very quickly
towards a 3000 version. There is also a company in CA that custom installs
Toasters in 3000s, upgrades the Pwr supply and warrantees the whole thing
for a year. I believe its $350.
Good luck.
Chris:
I don't have a Toaster, but I do have a fairly fully expanded A300 (all 4
ZorroIII slots full, 2 HD's, and an 040 card), and would be interested in
the name of the company you mentioned, as I've been looking for a beefed
up powersupply for my machine. Any information you could give me would be
appreciated.

How did you fit the second hard drive in your 3000?
ROBERT
It isn't to hard. Just use velcro and stick the second on on top of the
first one. Get a 12 inch cable to extend the power and data cables and
hook it up. It works great.

I am interested in installing a Toaster in my A3000 too.
Any suggs.

There is also a company in Missouri which makes adapters for the A3000…
but a pair of nibblers is a heck of a lot cheaper than any adapter.
Thanks for the info!
