#3DSr2 Problem w/ATI Driv
6 messages in this thread
My Gateway 2000 4DX2-66V computer is equipped with an ATI Graphics Ultra
Pro local bus video card. I've run into a problem trying to install the
special ATI "DLXPRESS" drivers for Autodesk's 3D Studio release 2 (which
was already working on my system by using a VESA driver).
When I try to follow installation instructions, everything seems to work
well until I reach the step of deleting the "3DADI.CFG" configuration file
and then starting the 3DS.EXE file. When I reach the part about video
display resolution, I get the following error message when I try to select
640×480-256 colors:
Error Number 1206 : Not enough color planes to support 256 colors.
256 color modes require 8 color planes to operate. Only 4
planes were detected which prevents the use of 256 color modes.
Select a 16 color mode or add memory to the graphics board.
With 1 mb of RAM on the ATI GUP, can't I run 256 colors with this driver?
Or might this be a symptom of some kind of hardware or memory conflict?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Lee, you should be able to run 8-bit stuff at that res on that card, but
you're going to have to ask a display expert about it. JackB or ChrisE
ought to have a definitive word about that. (I'm basically a hardware
idiot, and this question is WAY out of my league.)

I know the exact problem your seeing. ATI performed a minor silicon rev
that just happened to changed the bit used to determine the type and amout
of memory on the board, which is affecting the driver that you have. I
will have our tech support staff contact you directly and they will fix you
right up.

Jack,
What a quick reply! I'm encouraged (and grateful).
I don't know if I left my phone number on my original
message:(616)669-1138. I'll be working at home the rest of this week and
should be around most of the time.
Thanks,

Jack,
Thanks again for your encouraging reply. I'm very eager to get some tech
support assistance so I can overcome this problem (I can't run 3DSr2 until
I do).
Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything from tech support yet. Can someone
help me this (Thursday) morning ASAP? Is there some patch or revised file
I can download from somewhere? Please help!
Thanks,
