#Emplant?

Anybody out their ever hear of a gizmo called the Emplant? I heard a rumour
that it is a new MAC Emulator BUT get this it Emulates a COLOR MAC II FX
from what I was told. I'd love to be able to Run Adobe Photoshop on my
Amiga 3000
I haven't heard anything in about a month or so.. I t is supposed to
emulate the MAC IIx – not the FX. It supports 16 colors and 256 colors
with other video hardware.

Theres a Wee bit about the Emplant in the new Amazing Amiga it claims all
ye need do is suply ROMS to the Emplant and ya can Emulate ANY CPU.
You own Adobe PhotoShop? Or you're going to run a $600 program on an
emulator?
Running a $600 program on an emulator doesn't seem so farfetched to me.
After all, people run $1000+ programs on a $900 PC clone… <grin> And if
the emulator is any good, it's probably a LOT cheaper than buying a real
Mac.

It doesn't make much sense to me – what good is PhotoShop on a 16 color
screen? It'll look worse than a 256 color board. I'm not even certain it
will run on less than a 256 color display. Sure, Color QuickDraw handles
it, but it won't look very good. Of course, the Amiga hardware might
change in the future…

I was told that with 3rd party graphics boards(such as the resolver, or
many others) that it will be able to run in any mode up to 24 bit. But is
photoshop really $600? I saw one just this morning in my schools computer
store for $120. Of course they were closing down..
I havn't been following this real close so I'm not sure if someone
already asked this, but does this Emplant thing need the 128k roms? I have
a set for sale at the moment along with an Apple drive but if this thing
does what it says, I might keep the ROMS.

I'm not sure about 128k. I know the newer roms are supported like the
IIcx roms etc..You should give them a call. I don't have the number handy,
but Utilities Unlimited advertises in Amazing.

Actually, Photoshop looks pretty good on a 16 color screen, although I
mostly use it on a 256 color screen. It seems to be optimized for use on
the 256 color screens, although if you have a fast enough machine it's
reasonable enough on the true color screens as well. I suspect you've been
spoiled by 24 bit color on the Mac, but I assure you 256 color use is
sufficient for Photoshop by far.

Nope, but we are planning to mail them in a week or so. (Better than the
"in a month" I'd been saying up til this point. It's actually in draft
form in the DTP program, so it's not far off.)

Every time you ask me if it's done, another fifteen minutes delay is
introduced. This reminds me of the answer I'd give when relatives pestered
me to get married: I'd say, "I'll get married exactly six months after the
last person asks me when I'm getting married." Yes, there's only about
three people interested in the Atari ST CAD-3D converter – you're one of
the three – and I haven't the urge to dust off my ST to bother to write and
test the "write" side of the Converter.

Photoshop runs perfectly on the Amax in 2bit mode. Why would anybody want
to do that? Well Photoshop has its own Virtual Memory. I have a friend who
has it on his 3000 with Amax. I was able to migrate a 8.5 meg file to Amax
via a partition jump and bring the file to him. From there it got converted
to the PICT file that the Mac film recorder parlor required. I have a very
beautiful 11X14" print from the slide. Its laminated and framed and hanging
over my desk. Photoshop has the ability to handle a lot of file formats,
hugh files (to a point) and it is the weapon of choice in the Mac
environment. It can be had for a lot less than $600.00
I had *no* idea. 🙂 You're elbows deep in the Mac-Amiga interface, huh?
I've written a few articles about those kinds of tricks, I should keep you
in mind as a resource for the next one!
I try not to make a study of the Mac system. Can't stand it really. Maybe
it is the Mac "attitude" that gives me fits. If I get one more mail order
Mac catalog with that Zenish look to it. Arghhh! ( I always enter their
contests though). However, the truth of the matter is that the higher end
of desk top publishing, including the film recorders, reside in greater
numbers in the Mac Kingdom.
hmmm… "high" orders and "Zen" catalogs… Maybe the reason Apple can
charge so much for Mac peripherals is the knowledge their customers are
_addicted_!

They have created their own culture and they feed it too.
There are a lot of things I respect about the Mac, and as you said, there
are a lot of things that give me fits. I use a Mac IIci regularly for some
tasks. I've lost count of the number of times the hard disk crashes when
an application freezes for no apparent reason. Thank goodness for the
Norton Utilities. And all the Mac catalogs do look alike. 🙂
Yes, I need to invest in Norton. I'd like to add a Syquest to my system but
I'm a little hesitant to do it as I own a GVP controller :').
I have a GVP and a pair of Syquests on it, I haven't used them a *lot*, but
I haven't had any troubles, either…
Maybe there is hope.
I have a GVP Controller with a Syquest and have had NO Problems I have the
88 meg Syquest along with a Factory installed 52 meg Quantum internally in
a Bodega Bay/500
What Syquest did you get? I'm looking at the Macintosh offerings. Did you
buy the drive and put it in your own case? Good to know it likes the GVP.
I have the 88 meg SYQUEST WHICH I PURCHASED FROM Manta in New Jersey I
bought the Internal unit and mounted it in one of the 5 1/4" Drive bays in
my Bodega Bay for my lowly Amiga 500(works GREAT BTW) Manta's price when I
got it a few months ago was $435 for the INTERNAL unit

Did you working Syquest drive require a special driver or other software
files? I've hooked up a (non-Syquest) SCSI tape that didn't come with
software and am having troubles getting it to work.

VM ???? I came late to this thread. Are you talking Virtual Memory
( pant pant ). If so would this be for imagemaster only or system
level for any app to use?

I've got a VM program that I picked up off a local BBS. I figured it
would be on CIS..I don't know if it works or not. Never tried it. I can
upload it here tonight, and let the sysops look over it, to see if it's for
real or what. You do need a 030 w/MMU to use it.

I am interested in the VM program. What's it called? It's to bad
about it useing a 030 mmu as my 030 is OOS (Out Of System), it wont
work with the new 2.04 system so I'm in slow mo until I figure out a
solution or can afford an upgrade. I've been looking for a good
execuse
to go with a GVP anyway ever since I saw the info on their new
graphics

I uploaded the code(it wasn't a program, just some C code. And I'm not
sure if it just needed to be compiled, or was intended to be worked into
one of yourown programs or what) to the Amigatech section. Someone later
left a message asking if anyone had gotten it to work, so I'm assuming that
it won't work without some(or alot) of tinkering. Sorry if I got your hopes
up(mine were to). But if your knowledgeable when it comes to C, then you
should check it out.

In fact, I called them a couple of days ago, inquiring wether or not it
was still shipping on theier announced date. I was told that if you have
an order in now, you will be receiving it at the end of this month. If
not, you'll have to wait until the middle or end of Aug because they had so
many orders. It will(I was told) emulate anything up to the quadra. And
with a 3rd party board you will be able to use any mac screen mode.
