I am a new member to the forum but not to Amiga. I was wondering
the easiest way to download software and if there is a catalog of the
downloadable material in the library?

As a matter of fact, there is a freshly updated catalog availabe in
lib 1 under the name of AMUSRC.LHA. You'll need the program LZ or LHARC to
extract the catalog from the archive.

I am new to modems and am having a difficult time downloading
software. It asks me what protocol to use. I have no idea! Also, will it
save files to a disk or my HD? ………HELP………!!!!!
It asks for a filename for my computer, I enter it, nothing
happens. Also, I'm not sure what an LZ or LHARC file is.

Your software manual should explain to you how to download
software. It should tell you what protocol options are available to you.
Since you got to the point where it asked for a filename for you
computer, you must have selected one of the 'B' protocols. Those protocols
are specific to CompuServe…but many, many terminals support them. What
should have occured after that (once you entered a filename) is that the
transfer should have started if indeed your terminal program supported that
protocol.
You can indeed download to either your floppy or your HD or even to
RAM: the way to do this is to simply preface the filename (when asked or
prompted by your program) with where exactly you want the program to go.
For example, if you wanted it downloaded to a directory called "downloads"
on a hard drive known as DH0: they you'd enter dh0:downloads/<filename>
where <filename> is the name you wish the file called after download.
LZ and LHARC are compression programs. That is, they take a file
and make it smaller so that it costs less to download it.
You can practice uploading and downloading from Compuserve's
practice forum (GO PRACTICE). The practice forum is free of normal
Compuserve connect charges. Once you get that down ok…then download the
file ARCHLP.EXE from this forum and it'll explain the use of LHARC and
other archivers.

The telecomm software I'm using is PD…I have no manuals to tell
me the protocol. One is Handshake, the other is Access!. If I successfully
choose the right protocol, will CIS at least tell me that a file is
downloading? Also, can I download GIF files? Is the a software for the
Amiga like CIM for the DOS and Mac machines?

If your using Access! 1.42 then it supports Compuserve B protocol.
It will (should) work transparently for you. Just select the Quick B
protocol option from the CIS menu and when it ask file name for your
computer give it the path and the filename you want to call it. I suggest
you use the EXACT name found in CIS library. the three letters after the
dot (.) indicate what type ofsion is used. so if the file is called
LHA132.run, this is an archiver the .run tells me it is not compressed but
made to either RUN or Self-Extract. Another example. Snap16.LHA, an
archive compressed using an archiver that supports LHA filecompression. I
would download the Archiver in Lib 16 called LHA132.RUN for any
decompressing of files with the extension .LZH or LHA.
As for GIF files, you can download them, but then need an utility to
convert the GIF to IFF. Look over in AmigaArts, I believe you'll find it
there. Try this at a LIB prompt (go into a library first)
