ColdBoot Weirdness?

Howdy,
Right after installing a new harddrive onto my 2091 controler upon cold
booting I get the purple screen with the animated disk . The screen says
2.0 Roms and some copyright stuff. When I warm boot after that, the
machine boots normally. Anyone recognize these symptoms?
I've all the latest ROMs on my motherboard, 2630 accelerator and 2091
controler.

Jan, Are you by any chance using a Seagate drive? Some of those are
notoriously slow to come up to speed from a cold start. When you warm
boot, it's already spinning. There's a jumper on the 2091 to increase the
delay time. I don't have a copy handy, but it should be in the manual.
JP1-5 seems to strike a memory chord though… 🙂

I got a Maxtor 340 mb drive. Why does a un-spun-up harddrive interfere
with the boot-up process?
I know about that jumper, it's Jumper 5, Option 2, and it needs to be set
to the "on" position to increase the time-out. That's according to
Appendix B on p. 69 of the "2091 User's and Installation guide".

I'll check/change the jumper and see what happens.

Jan, the controller card will only wait for so long before giving up and
asking for the floppy. That's the purple screen. Do you have another HD on
the string?

I've got an external Quantum 80 dedicated to Amax. The internal 340 Maxtor
and an internal 44meg Syquest are the only drives.
I'll live with re-booting vs waiting a minute or so.

If you feel inclined to play with it some more, you might make sure the
boot drive, the Maxtor I assume, has the lowest SCSI address. It could
also be waiting for the Syquest, if you don't have a cart loaded at boot
time. Giving the Maxtor the lower address will cause the controller to see
it first when looking for a boot partition.

Well I think the cure is worse than the disease. I set the 2091s Jumper
5, Option 2 to "on". That took about one minute to boot!
I think I'll live with the need to warm-boot out of the "purple" screen.
Now it only takes about 20 seconds (combined) to boot-up.

Same thing happened here after putting in the 2.04 ROM in my A2.5K/2620
and 2090A card with a 105 MB quantum. Have to give it the salute a couple
of seconds after hitting the power switch to avoid seeing the WB floppy
request screen. Have contemplated increasing the power up time delay
inthe hardware, just haven't done it yet.
