My understanding is that the bottleneck in the CD-ROM/SCSI subsystem is the
CD-ROM. Most 8-bit cards run faster than most CD-ROMS (I know my PAS16
card w/ SCSI will run >600kps) while most drives are 300kps or less (unless
you get the Pioneer 604x – 600kps). The bottom line is that unless you
putting in a SCSI HD, a better SCSI interface won't buy much.

A sore point with me, I hope that the combo sound cards with SCSI will
get 'up to speed' and run a hard drive decently, maybe even floppies (a 59
cent chip).
Alas, as more and more systems come with IDE hard drives, I don't think we
will see this. Too bad….

Well, not really! The FDC chip costs about $15 plus peripheral parts
unless you want to buy several million of them. Floppy controllers are NOT
cheap!
I'm sure you know a lot more of the nuts and bolts of this than I do Mr.
Systems, (can I call you Trantor? <g>)
But I can buy a combo IDE hard/floppy controller and IO card for around 23
dollars. When you back this down the channel, cost can't be more than $10.
I thought this stuff was all generic by now, and real cheap…
