Boy am I inspired and excited. I received the "Amiga Gang" video today (Thanks Jerry), and my congratulations to all who contributed. I am full of new ideas. Eric I loved your submarine scene and I AM going to tackle an underwater scene next. I also got the latest issue of APEX, Steve Worley's newsletter with a full description Essence II. Well, as fast as I could get myself to the phone I got my order in! It looks fantastic. So good that it might pull some Lightwave addicts back to Imagine just to use these textures! …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Jerry and all, Got my tape yesterday. Really good. Nice work, everybody. I felt curios, embarrased, jealous, entertained and amused all in one sitting. Kinda like a good movie. Man, I've got a lot of work to do…. … Nate, Emerald Video.

Nate, Took you through the full range of emotions, huh?? Speaking of movies, I just got back from seeing "The Firm". It sold out 6 showings here today, and all were sold out 2-3 hours prior to each of those showings. Great movie, but not much animation and special FX. Make that NO animation or special FX… Jerry

Jerry, I'll have to check it out. Much action? Heck, I finally just saw JP. Two things stood out. One, that fake bomb-scare in the theater at the beginning was a real grabber. Oh, wait, I guess it wasn't a fake after all. They did a search, but it made watching the rest of the movie very interesting. Second, I was going to make a valiant effort to catch as many Fx's as I could, but they were realistic enough that I forgot to watch for 'em! I guess there's still a kid in here somewhere. 8{). … Nate, Emerald Video.

Nate, _Some_ action in "The Firm". No bomb scare in my theater, though…. Jerry

My feelings Exactly. Come on, your stuff looked great. Theres plenty of room at the top, If I could only get myself headed that direction. I guess next time everyone should add a clip of themselves and their Amiga setup. ….John

What a Horrible Thought. You KNOW that some of us would get CREATIVE in our Clips of ourselves. I've got a fair amount of Prosthetics laying around and some Makeup FX knowledge for Example. What you'd see would not be me. hehehehehehehehehehehe My FAVE Prosthetic is a Slit Throat Piece that Looks GREAT when applied correctly with Spirit Gum. Add some Water and Red Food Coloring and a Pump that is unseen by the camera and a Gory Clip it would be.

Why do you Randomly capitalize Words? I am Not complaining, and I Doubt it bothers anyOne, but I am Curious. Bob
#32838From: Peter GreciJul 3, 1993 12:59 AM
For Emphasis on the words. That is why I SEEMINGLY make random words in sentences all Caps. Since getting out of School my speeling and Grammer have gone to H*ll in a handbasket.

John, I dunno. Peter pushed my reset button. I think I'm just gonna have some fun on the next couple. Maybe a pinball machine from the ball's point of view. Hey, I thought at least <SOMEBODY> else was going to put their picture there :^) … Nate, Emerald Video.

I thought the "live video" segment was great. I liked seeing you're computer setup as well. Next round we should all do it! …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Tilt Tilt Tilt. That Pinball machine definitely sounds like a nice idea Nate. have FUN with it. Glad I was able to spark ideas in your minds eye.
#32856From: Nathan WahlJul 3, 1993 7:50 AM
The layout is already done, and the base (with droptarget holes, capturer holes, and the basic raised areas) is almost there. Neat! BTW, should I let the camera roll with the ball, or should I just selectively pan it the direction of travel to keep the less queasy from getting sick? This'll have more key frames than a lock museum! :^) … Nate, Emerald Video.
#32868From: Peter GreciJul 3, 1993 11:32 AM
I think you should Ditch the Ball and make the CAMERA the Ball. Do the Anim as a Balls Eye view of a Pinball Machine Make Us SICK, it'll be more impressive that way hahahahahahahahaha. Pinball Animation So REAL it'll make you Sick.
#32886From: Nathan WahlJul 3, 1993 9:33 PM
Peter, Yup, that's the idea. I figure I'll just keep the camera pointed in the general direction of travel, with no bank or pitch. Wait 'till I get you stuck between two active bumpers! … Nate, Emerald Video.

Sounds good To me. Happy 4th of July. Pinball Fever.

I've been working on a pinball machine myself! I've gotten the basic cabinet done, so I've got to get the playfield done. I've been doing everything to scale based on the machine I have here in my office. I've always thought that if I were to do an animation in this, I'd place the camera above the ball and a bit in back of it, so part of the ball is showing while it cruises around hitting things. I'd also make the pinball have a few imperfections and rotate it so that the imperfections would show up briefly in the camera's view while it was rolling around. I'd really like to see what you come up with! Steve

Steve and Nate, I don't know if there are any Cinemark theaters in your area, but they open all their movies with a pseudo pinball animation; combination of 2D and 3D; SUPER impressive and worth checking out as you get ideas. It's done as Steve suggested, with the camera slightly behind and above a solid glass pinball. The purpose of the animation is to subtly convey the rules of the theater; i.e. the ball rolls over a noisy guy, a flipper sticks a pacifier in a crying baby's mouth, etc….. Jerry
#32872From: Marlene Zenker/SYSOPJul 3, 1993 2:19 PM
I like that glass pinball idea. I bet the image distortion that it gives while moving around looks pretty good. I don't think there are any Cinemark theaters in the area, but I'll keep an eye out! Steve
#32889From: Nathan WahlJul 3, 1993 9:33 PM
Jerry, None of those around here. I think I'll just do a ball's eye view, and play with timing to get it realistic (realistically FAST) as possible. Ooooohhhh! Spinning disk with an orange and yellow spiral on it. A CRT on the backboard showing anims, seen up through the glass. A twisty tunnel in spiral neon guide tubes, maybe. Gotta go!!! … Nate, Emerald Video.
#32887From: Nathan WahlJul 3, 1993 9:33 PM
Steve, Great! I was thinking of doing one suitable for zero-G, spinning with drains all around, but I think I'll do something more traditional, like yours. Wow, you've got a real one? What is it? That definitely should make the modeling bearable. You gonna use the same layout as the real one? Were you going to make it with the playfield level in your modeler, tilt the cabinet appropriately, and then tilt the whole thing back when you render? I tried adding things to a tilted playfield; that is NOT the way to go. :^) Maybe we could UL some test renders in a couple of weeks and see how they compare. See Ya. … Nate, Emerald Video.
#32907From: Marlene Zenker/SYSOPJul 4, 1993 9:49 AM
I have an Eight-Ball Deluxe. I'm not going to use the same playfield layout…I'm going to do my own. I'm putting the bumpers, flippers, and drop targets all on a level surface and then tilting the playfield inside the cabinet. I still have to model the coin box front panel. Luckily I have that sitting about 5 feet away from me, so I don't have to do it all from memory! As soon as I have something acceptable for other people to see, I'll upload it! 🙂 Steve

So Nate: Are you doing this pinball machine for Art Tianis? If so, E-Mail me your price…. (& I'll tell you of my dealings w/ Art.) Keep On Toastin' Erik Flom
#32888From: Nathan WahlJul 3, 1993 9:33 PM
Erik, For somebody? Yeah, this one's for ME (thanks, Peter). It'll probably take enough hours that nobody would want it anyway. You familiar with the Perfectionist profile? 8{). … Nate, Emerald Video.
#32896From: Erik FlomJul 3, 1993 11:25 PM
Yeah, that's the problem I had with Art. I quoted him a realistic figure for what it would take to have me build a couple of scenes with a nice pinball machine, and I never heard from him after that…:^) Thanks, Keep On Toastin' Erik Flom

Work, Naa too much Fun to be WORK.
#32663From: Erik FlomJun 30, 1993 1:54 PM
Gee, thanks. :^) That arcade was a painful segment to produce. (Had some 'misunderstandings' with the client.) I've gotten pretty sick of it myself, but that's because I know what I'd do to make it even better now. (The motion path was too slow, but I have always had a problem with things being too fast previously…Grrr.) Thanks, Keep On Toastin' Erik Flom
#32687From: Peter GreciJun 30, 1993 4:21 PM
That Arcade Sequence was Quite nice. You definitely should send a copy to Full Moon Productions with a Resume. Ya never Know, I might see yer name in the Credits the next time I get a LD from them.

Paul, Did you use DCTV or yer 4000 for outputting for the Amiga Gang Tape? It was Soooo ULTRA CLEAN. Love to see that Aces of WWI Script when it's complete.
#32701From: Paul GerhardtJun 30, 1993 9:00 PM
Peter, It was all DCTV. The digital make-up sequence was a quick Amigavision slideshow. All the anims were pre 4000 except the last sequence with the mega zoom out, but I used DCTV to display that one as well. I just did my first underwater test anim. Took a model of one of those Japanese navel like space craft and stripped most of the junk off of it to get a submarine like form. I've got it cruising the murky depth. Boy am I going to have fun with this! BTW check out my post describing Essence II. I know your going to want this! …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-
#32742From: Peter GreciJul 1, 1993 3:48 PM
Quite Strange, We both used DCTV and your footage is Ultra Clean and mine is a Bit fuzzy. Esssence II does sounds GREAT. The Space Ship Hull will be a HUGE Help I believe.
#32762From: Paul GerhardtJul 1, 1993 9:31 PM
Even thought the anim gets to my VCR via composit video I still record to an SVHS tape in SVHS mode. The second generation VHS tape I sent to Jerry was duped from the SVHS master. …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-
#32840From: Peter GreciJul 3, 1993 12:59 AM
I sent a SVHS ORIGINAL to Jerry which makes it all the Weirder. The Coloring is really the only problem I saw.
