#NEC CDR-25 w/ MM??

Has anyone tried using a NEC CDR-25 with MPC titles or anything playing Windows .Wav files? I'm using a CDR-25 with a NEC Parallel-to-SCSI Adapter on a IBM 700C laptop. It works ok except, when playing audio files (from MS Bookshelf), the audio keeps cutting in and out. I can't figure out whether it's the Parallel-to-SCSI adapter, or the drive itself? Is anyone using the CDR-25 drive successfully with MPC titles? If so, how are you using it? Thanks.

The problem is you don't have enough throughput through the parallel port. The audio cuts out while it waits for the next bunch of data to arrive. A faster interface will help immensely. If your parallel port is bi-directional, the Trantor T348 will double your data transfer rate over the parallel-to-SCSI adapter model you are using. That will probably prevent the loss of audio you have now.

One more question—is the Parallel Port on my IBM 700C bi-directional? (will a Trantor cable speed up the interface to the CD-ROM?)

Paul, I have a CDR-25 on my machine. I have used several MPC titles now with all the permutations and combinations of audio, etc. The drive is no speed demon, but I get nothing in the way of droupouts or pauses. I also am using a cache program called lightning that speeds the drive up a bit, but I was getting acceptable performance from it before the cache program. I have the drive wired to an 8 bit nec scsi card. Regards, David

Dear Paul, I have a LEADING EDGE 386-SL Notebook with an external SCSI port connector and just bought the NEC CDR-25 EXPRESS. For four days I have been trying to run the CD-ROM to no avail. After booting, I keep getting the message, "No SCSI drives attatched. No SCSI BIOS installed. How did you get your laptop to load the CD-ROM without using an interface card via an expansion slot? I am using a NEC SCSI-to-Parallel port connector. The NEC SCSI-to-PP connector came with software that worked perfectly the first time i typed install. I would suspect your problem lies with the external SCSI connector.
