#Help!
13 messages in this thread
Dear Members: I am just starting to get interested in Raytracing, and using 3-D
Studio. However, I find that with my limited knowledge of graphics and
computing in general, it's pretty hard for me to get started, and the manuals
are very technical. Can anyone recommend a good book on using 3-D Studio and
Raytracing in general?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, Michael
Unfortunately, I don't know of any books specifically written about 3D Studio's
use. There is one that discusses modeling techniques that is geared for
AutoCAD and 3DS. It's called 'AutoCAD' '3D Design and Presentation' by New
Riders Publishing.
As for raytracing, you may have to look at other computer graphics magazines
and books.
I hope this helps,

Thanks, I'll check it out and let you know what I turn up with!

Bob & Michael….
I just met an author of 3DS books over the weekend, and I'll give her a
plug here. Her name is Michele Bousquet and she has written a 3 set of 3DS
books called Tips & Tricks for 3D Studio. One book covered the Renderer, One
the Shaper & Lofter, and the last the Keyframer. I may have gotten them a
little mixed up. But I looked over them and they looked quite good. I hope to
get the Colleg I work at to order a copy of the set.
The number she gave for ordering was 1-800-468 4322 (opamp), These looked
excellent as the "what to do once You've done the 3DS tutorials" type of book.

Roger:
Actually, since Opamp still doesn't have Michele's books, I just thought I'd
mention to you that we are also a US distributor of her 3DS books, and have
a good sized stock of them, with more ordered!

what are you charging, and what kind of plastic do you accept, if any?
Tim:
>> what are you charging, and what kind of plastic do you accept, if any?
Michelle's Standard Prices, (MSP) $49.95 individually or $129.95 for a set
of three 3DS books.
Plastic accepted is Master Card, VISA, American Express; also checks, cash,
postal money orders, arm-and-a-leg (if arm can still hold a mouse for 3DS)
or firstborn male child (if still trainable and under the age of 12)! <g>
FAX orders accepted at FAX (714) 833-8655.

Greg:
I've ordered the first book (on glass/reflections) from Australia (though it
hasn't come yet), but I'd be happy to order the others from you (I'll just get
'em at SIGGRAPH!).
What are the subjects of the other two volumes again?
Dave
Hey Greg….
They don't have them yet??? Hmmm. Ok so how do we order from you guys?
Oh and BTW I also noticed your name under technical editor for these
books. Good stuff.
I attended your talk at the ATC manager's meeting in Anaheim, really
enjoyed the work you have done.

Thanks! It was an enjoyable group to give a 3DS presentation to!

Roger,
Regarding Michele Bousquet's 3DS books…
How much of the books dealt with Architectural or Mechanical examples?
I'm thinking of our Architectural and Mechanical technology courses
here
in the college….
Mark K.
Hey Mark….
I just moved over to check out the section a couple of days ago… and
man is this section HOT…. I had a quick look at her books, over a draft, and
they looked quite good but I don't remember any architectural and or mechanical
examples, perhaps you could post a message to her. She seems to be around here.

I have not personally seen any in-depth books of 3D Studio, but there are two
books on Ray-tracing for POV-RAY (a freeware program over in the GRAPHDEV) put
out by the Waite Group Press. One is called Image Lab, by Tim Wegner, which is
pretty good (I like it anyway). They offer another advertised called 'ray
tracing creations' by Drew Wells. I have not seen them. You can order direct at
1-800-368-9369. I don't know what the print status is of these. I do know
POV-RAY is going to be putting out ver. 2 sometime soon, so the book may be
updated too. Mitchell Waite will most likely be able to tell you more if he is
listening. I've seen him lurking about here on occasion, but I don't know his
#.
