#DWG Autocad?? -> DXF

Hi all. Got a problem here. I've been given a disk from a "possible"
client who uses AutoCAD. I was so sure the file format was going to be in DXF
that I accepted. But the files are in DWG which 3D Studio (apparently) cannot
read. Can anyone _please_ give me some quick information on how I can get this
file format into 3D Studio? Any sort of conversion utility or something?

The best conversion utility I know of is called AutoCAD! <g>
Have your client save it out in DXF format and you'll be fine. Tell him to
just save it with the defaults, it'll work OK. If it's really big (the dxf
file is always _much_ larger than the dwg file), you could ask him to save
it as a binary dxf, which 3DS reads fine also.
Have fun, and remember to render 2-sided!

The only conversion utility I know of is Autodesk Visual Link. But you still
need AutoCAD to run this program.
I would go back to your client and ask him for a .DXF or .FLM (filmroll) file.
That would be the fastest, I think.

Right now the best utility is "Visual Link" which is an application
that works inside Autocad, it will take the open autocad file and convert it
directly to .3ds format. If you don't have Autocad, or don't have Visual Link,
have the file saved as a DXF. The important thing is if the drawing is a solid,
the solid must be meshed before DXFing or 3D Studio won't load any data.

If you need to convert just a file or two, ask your 3DS dealer to do it for
you. Or find a friendly person with a copy of AutoCAD.
