BB using OS/2

I've seen an ad for a used 160 mb disk drive, and I was wondering if it's
possible to load OS/2 as the operating system on a bridge partition? I'd
need to replace my 286 BB with a 386SX one of course, but at least then it
would almost be like having an Amiga, and a second machine almost as good
as an Amiga.

I can't tell you for sure…I've never tried it, but I'd strongly
suspect that yes…you can use OS/2 on a 386sx BB. But I'd also suspect
you'd need a real BB side HD, not a shared HD from the Amiga side.
That's just my guess…I have no facts one way or the other.

I would recommend you NOT to! Have you ever used OS/2 on a PC? I can tell
you, we use OS/2 2.0 on 386DX/20s w/ 12MB RAM and a 60MB partition for the
system (plus 80 for apps). The OS is AWFULLY slow, gobbles up ENORMOUS
amounts of diskspace and real storage and is generally producing overhead
like hell.
Running OS/2 on a 386SX you can be sure to get a coffee addiction as
you'll get to drink LOTS of them. Plus you can fit a decent lunch into the
time it takes to boot.
The only reason for us to use OS/2 is the Mainframe connectivity feature
and the fact that IEF (CASE) runs only on OS/2.
I can see no reason why you would want to run OS/2. Almost no applications
are written for OS/2. Use DOS, which gets the most speed out of your
Intel. Use Windows if you REALLY need a GUI for the BB. Forget OS/2 unless
you're planning to invest heavily in a 486, lots of RAM and a 3-digit HD.

I guess I should acctually try OS/2 myself instead of just relying on what
I've seen in IBM demonstrations. The real multitasking operating system
appealed to me. The Windows [OK] requestors and slider bars (boxes) are
annoying to me. You can't put a requestor aside for a moment in Windows.
There have been times where I want to correct the condition Windows is
complaining about, but I have to start all over since I can't do anything
while that requestor is on the screen.
Also I've gotten used to slider bars that are proportional in size to the
amount of information you can see in the window. I never know how much to
move the slider box to see the area I want.
I guess I'll just stay with DOS, or maybe go to Deskview. In either case
I've got to get the current Janus software and reinstall my bridge
partition. This thing is running as slow as a cassette tape drive.

Desqview (and Desqview/X) is the only program for the IBM that could be
considered multitasking what so ever.
But it eats memory also (/X is a killer)
I now have 16mb in my IBM and still can't open windows under DVX without
dissabling everything in my config.sys and autoexec.bat.

Don't consider OS/2 with less then a 486 and 8 megs. Survivng that program
with a Make AB drive would be difficult. I would recommend an IBM only HD.
