#CD Yellow/Business Pgs?

Greg, you might consider the American Business Phone Book (DOS) despite its
limitations. It is a good number of U.S. and Canadian Yellow Pages listings,
has good search capabilities and above all is cheap. You should be able to find
it for $40 or less. I've seen it advertised for as little as $25.
Perhaps not everything you want, in fact probably not, but at that price you
might find it helpful until you find something better. Like others, it has its
shortcomings, a useage meter, lack of street numbers, some out of date numbers
etc. But on the whole it is pretty good, especially in relation to the street
price as compared to the list price (something like $295, I believe). Hope that

Ironically, it was my purchase of American Business Phone Book (DOS) that
prompted me to pose my question for a Windows based phone book for all the
reasons you cited… the usage meter especially! Its really not quite what I
want, but its all I can find.
I have asked around in a few forums but the response has been small if next to
nil. It seems there are few options around for business phone numbers with
serious well thought out search capabilities, or anything at all under Windows
(I am in sales and we run Windows For Workgroups).
Your $25-$40 price range really caught my eye since I paid $74 for mine. But I
can return it since I only bought it last week from IMTECH a local CDROM
corporate publishing house here in Atlanta.
Can you direct me to any mail order houses where I can find it cheaper than
$74.00?
Greg, the usage meter isn't quite the problem it might seem. First it allows
5,000 searches and that's quite a lot in a year — the expected life of the
disc if you think of it in terms of a telephone book published annually. And
that meter can be circumvented if you think about it — it is, after all, not
written on stone, it is written (and hidden) on your HD. I don't like programs
that write "secret" files to my HD but I also don't wish to break any rules
here so I won't say more.
As to the price, while the list is something like $295 I believe it wholesales
in quantities of six or more for something like $33 or $36 (when I checked with
the publisher some time ago). You should be able to find it on a BBS net or at
a computer flea market for under $50 and I have seen it for under $30. Make
sure you are getting the 1992 edition and not the earlier, not as complete (no
Canadian numbers!) 1991 version. If you can't find it at that price (and you
should be able to if you look, you could even try some of the Computer Shopper
ads) then you might consider buying six and selling five to
friends/co-workers/aquaintances for $40-$45 each. You'd get yours free.
And there are other, better phone compilations out there which have been
mentioned to you. They are somewhat more money, but could well be worth it for
professional use. Business Phone Book is fine for me, but then I live in Canada
