#Sony CDU31a CD Drive

Chuck:
When will the FINAL RELEASE of the DRIVER for this CD Drive be released?
Will there be any improvements? What?
Will you post on CIS more detailed information on the installation and use of
the current BETA DRIVER? For example, the IFS file, the right version for
MSCDEX, and etc.
I can say that this BETA DRIVER works well for me with the latest version of
OS/2, Winos2, my PAS16 card, and permits installation of OS/2 from the CD.
But, the use is so poorly documented that I had much trouble figuring out what
was essential in the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file so that the CD icon would show up on
the OS/2 Desktop and on the Drive line in Winos2.
Please post some help? Thanks. Cecil
Cecil,
>> When will the FINAL RELEASE of the DRIVER for this CD Drive be released?<<
As soon as all the known bugs are fixed, and Sony and IBM are both happy with
the driver, it will be released.
>>Will there be any improvements? What?<< Some problems with IRQ-driven
operation will be resolved, as well as some problems with multitasking. These
fixes should improve system performance, which currently takes a hit when the
CD-ROM drive is being accessed.
>>Will you post on CIS more detailed information on the installation and use of
the current BETA DRIVER? For example, the IFS file, the right version for
MSCDEX, and etc.<< The README file will be updated when the driver itself is
updated. MSCDEX.EXE is not needed. As for what other files are needed, refer
to the text file in OS2CDR.ZIP, which is available in library 17 of the
OS2SUPPORT forum.
>>But, the use is so poorly documented that I had much trouble figuring out
what was essential in the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file so that the CD icon would show
up on the OS/2 Desktop and on the Drive line in Winos2.<< Sorry about that –
there is a bug in the install program for OS/2 2.1 that is the source of a ton
of confusion. A workaround for that bug will be in the README file for the
next release of SONY31.ZIP. Hopefully IBM will also post some sort of notice
documenting the install problem and the workaround solution.
Thanks for your feedback, Cecil.
