#Bad HD's 4 1200
6 messages in this thread
Attention!!!
Current and Prospective 1200 owners!!!!
If you intend to purchase a 1200 without a hard drive so as to put one in
with a larger capacity, there are some drives that will not work!!!
There are only two approved hard drives at this time…
SEAGATE and Western Digital
DO NOT BUY A TOSHIBA!! It will not autoboot and will not work properly.
It is a timing problem that may or may not be fixed in the future.
I have been told that a Maxtor will also work but that is unconfirmed!
SEAGATE now has a 200MB 2.5" drive (PART #9235-A or 9235-AG).
I originally purchased a Toshiba because it has better specs but I only
found this out afterwards!
Just, FYI!
Jon
Thanks for the info. I almost bit on a 1200 last weekend bcause I found
an 80 meg drive for 200. But the guy at Creative kinda warned me off.
He said the bare 1200 has no HD utilities yet…..so you gotta buy one
with a 40 meg, then upgrade. very interesting!!!!!
You are correct. The 1200 doesn't come with a 3.0 Install disk (sounds
stupid to me!). What I've done is copy on efrom my dealer temporarily and
I've called Commodore in PA and bitched some poor lady out. She is going to
send me an original. Also note: the 1200 does not come with a complete set
of WB 3.0 manuals. It only comes with the Workbench Manual but lacks the
ARexx Guide and the AmigaDOS Guide. I bitched at em about this one too and
they should be sending them out to me also. It sucks but COmmodore goofed
again. If you bitch loud and long enough, though, you'll get what you
want. It's just a little more work for the 1200 non-HD.
John,
I wouldn't let that stop you from buying an A1200, I have one and love
it! All you really *NEED* to install a hard drive (other than a 44 pin IDE
cable and four screws) is a copy of HDToolbox. Having the 3.0 Install disc
would make things easier, but it's not nessessary.
Dennis ….on AutoPilot
Safe Harbor put a package together. I just received mine. In it you have
the Maxtor 2585 (85meg) + 44 pin cable + installation docs+ installation
disk + screws ,so everything you need. The sad part is from F..king
Commodore again i'm still waiting for my A1200 which was order at Xmas time
and my dealer told me yesterday that there is no a1200 left and that we
must wait for the next production i'm an Amiga diehard (a1000 pionneer) but
now i'm getting tired of that nonsense. Bye Michel
John,
So that explains why my Toshiba which I got yesterday will not autoboot. I
did find that if I powerup and then do a Ctl-Amiga-Amiga, I can at least
access the hard drive but certain programs I installed (monkey island 2 and
Red Baron) have the video output all screwed up. How did you find out
about the details of the problem (timing bug, etc.) and were you able to
return the drive? Please give me a little more info and thanks for what
you did give. I have been scratching my head awhile on this.
