#NEC CDR-38 with Adaptec

As a follow up to a previous message I left, I have just tried using my NEC CDR-38 with an Adaptec 1542C SCSI card and a DEC SCSI hard disk. The CDR-38 seems to cause the Adaptec BIOS software to hang during boot-up, whether the harddisk is connected or not. I have tried using SCSI address 0 and 1. Termination is set ON on the drive itself. If I have only the harddisk connected to the Adaptec card and the 38 connected to an NEC/Trantor SCSI card everything works fine. Does anyone have any ideas? Perhaps the CDR-38 is not intended to be used with a full blown SCSI card? Graham Hobson

I managed to get a CDR-25 working(?) with an Adaptec 1542C, but I kept getting random I/O errors on the SCSI hard drive I also had connected. I finally put the NEC back on the PAS+ SCSI port and the I/O errors went away. D.

On the Adaptec 1542, make sure you disable sync negotiation and parity. Also, the CD-ROM needs to be at SCSI address 2 or higher. It won't work properly at SCSI id 0 or 1. Set the CDR-38 to SCSI-2 mode, too.

The CDR-25 doesn't have a SCSI-2 mode. It was produced before the CDR-38 became available.
