HP DeskJet & Final Copy?
5 messages in this thread
Hi, Folks! I have recently taken the plunge and bought an HP DeskJet 500-C
inkjet printer to go with my Amiga (it's about time!) to replace my Daisy
Wheel. I have also ordered Final Copy II to take advantage of the
printer's graphic capabilities. My question is: Since Final Copy uses its
own outline font system, do I have to add a RAM cartridge to the HP
printer to use the soft fonts? According to the manual, I think I do, but
it is written mainly for use with MS-DOS / WINDOZE machines. If anybody
that uses an HP 500 series printer with Final Copy could respond, I would
appreciate it. Thanks!!

Do NOT purchase a RAM cartridge for your deskjet if you will be using it
with Final Copy. I have all three (FC, DJ, RAM cart).
The only time the ram cartridge is useful is if you are going to be
downloading soft fonts into the printer's ram cartridge. Final Copy does
not download its fonts to the printer so you don't need the ram cartridge.
Final Copy sends the final image (probably a graphics image) directly to
the printer.
Does this help?

Jay: Thanks for the info! To my surprize, I got Final Copy the same day I
posted the question, (got it from SmartSoft – got it 24 hours later!) so I
naturally tried it out, and it works fine with the printer as-is. I was
worried because I thought FC downloaded its fonts to the printer for
rendering, but luckily that is not the case.
BTW, I really love the combination of FC and the DJ! The only problem is
that the HP clay coated paper is a) hard to find and b) expensive!!!
Thanks again! <via AutoPilot>

FC_II creates a graphic image of the page to be printed, and all printing
is done graphically. There are no fonts downloaded to the printer, so you
do not need a memory cartridge. Fonts don't enter into printing at all,
other than creating the graphic image in the first place.

Thanks, Don! I have been playing around with my new printer and FC-II
every spare moment lately, and without too much fuss, I've been able to
come out with some NICE looking documents! I STUNNED nearly everybody who
saw what this combo can do! (I kinda like that).
BTW, I got FC_II the same day I posted the message and (luckily) found out
via the manual that the RAM cartridge wasn't needed… so I spared my
wallet the extra damage (and, man, has it been DAMGED this month!)
Thanks again!
