#CD-R Label Printing

Has anyone seen or used the Trace CDP-5300 Compact Disc Printer? This is for
printing labels on one-offs. It uses bubble-jet mechanism to print on the
surface of "printable" CD-R media. They want $5,549 for the printer. The
printable media goes for about 10% higher than the non-printable media.
Alternatively, does anyone have alternate solutions to the "Sharpie" pen for
creating CD-R labels?

I've seen the Trace printer. It does a nice job. I talked to Matthew Leek of
Trace about the potential for using multiple colors, which he hadn't thought
about, but his technical person said it was feasible. The media has a matte or
satin finish (sort of like anodized gold-colored aluminum, although I don't
know what the material is).

There is an alternative to disc printers and felt pens — one of our shops
makes paper labels on adhesive-backed paper that can be custom printed. If

Thanks Kathy. I could see the logic of the Trace printer for one of your
franchises, but it's a bit pricy for us (only $1,000 cheaper than the
Trace/Sony CD-R recorder!)

You're welcome. It's a bit steep, but if it's what you need, it does a good
job. You can use any graphics package to develop the images to print on the
CD-R, I believe.

Spoke with Sony yesterday and learned that you can have 2 color label placed on
CD-R blanks for free. The catch… it is done in Japan with a 1000 disc
minimum. Although at $18 each it did require some consideration.
I would be very interested in whatever you find out.

I've seen the data on the Trace CDP-5300 but haven't purchased one yet. We've
been using silk screens with special ink. It works well but you've got to be
making several copies of the same label to make it cost effective.
