I'm looking for a CD-ROM performance-checking utility. I've heard that
Microsoft has something called "CDSPEED", but I can't seem to find it. Can
someone tell me where to find this (or similar) utility?

You can get a CDROM disk called "MPC Wizard" at your local Egghead store for
about $10. It has some utilities and some tests for MPC compatibility,
including speed. It also has some beautiful pictures with music.

Two that I know of:
1. There's a file VIDST.ZIP that has a program called VID_TEST.EXE that
will test your CD-ROM's capability with a .avi file. I downloaded from
CIS but I don't remember where. You should be able to find it using
BROWSE. It doesn't gove you very much information though.
2. There is a program called VIDTEST on Microsofts Multimedia Pack 1.0
CD-ROM. I think it's exactly what you want. Microsoft sent it to me for
being a beta testor for their Multimedia Extensions (Bombay). I haven't
seen it advertised anywhere. Check with Microsoft Sales.
By the way, CDSPEED is the name of the Speedway CD-ROM disk caching program.
