Hi,
I have an Adaptec 1740 connected with three internal devices setup, two hard
disks and an exabyte drive, connected on the fileserver. These have been
working fine for a long time. The problem is when I am trying to add an
external device to the Adaptec using the port on the outside. As the manual
says I have removed the three terminator resistors on the card. I am trying to
add a CDROM. I have given it a unique ID and terminated it. Everything the
manual says do, however the card never registers the facts the CDROM is there.
I know the CDROM is okay as it works fine on a standalone machine using the
tranton scsi adapter. Has anyone any ideas on what I have missed???

It's probably the SCSI-2 cable or the plug. One time when I was trying to plug
in the cable I pushed a little too hard and pushed one of the pins in the
cable-plug back into the cable housing — needless to say, this caused
problems. Look at the SCSI-2 cable plug at the 1740 end and see if all the
pins are there (there are 50 of them) and they all come out of the plug for the
same distance. Also, the AHA-1740 is very sensitive to impedance mismatches, or
so I have heard. I have one internal drive and two external device (a tape
backup and a CD-ROM (Toshiba 3401)) mounted in an external box. And other than
the problem with the cable plug, I've had no problems.

How do you know the 1740 never sees the CD-ROM? It never prints anything other
than drive C: and D:. What CD-ROM drive are you using? Is synchronous
transfers turned off? If you're using a Toshiba 3401, I have heard you need
drivers from Adaptec which support it. Corel SCSI works too.
