I am having trouble with my soundblaster pro card and the cooresponding CD-ROM drive. When using a CD supplied with the kit, the system works fine. The system also works fine with some commercial software. When using some commercial disks, however, the audio is barely audible. The packages all say to use MSCDEX version 2.1 or higher. I have 1.x and some of the programs run fine. Could an older version of MSCDEX be my problem and if so, how do I get a newer one?

You can d/l mscdex from CIS (GO MULTIMEDIA), filename is MSCDEX.EXE; or (GO MSL) and d/l CDEXT.EXE. The former should be v2.22, the newest; the latter may still be v2.21. If you have DOS6, it comes with that product; just look in your DOS directory. Some of the oddities of the various versions of mscdex are outlined in file laser3.txt in Lib. #4 here if you have problems.
