I'm starting up an Amiga support bbs and I was wondering where i could get some
fred fish cd-roms or other amiga shareware cd-roms from. could thoses disks be
read by an ibm cd-rom drive?

If you order the Xetec driver software from Xetec, you'll get two CD ROMs
for your $50. Another $25 will get a 650 MEG CD of the AmiNet Internet
archives. You can order that from Walnut Creek.
What kind of CD-ROM drive do you own?

I would suggest getting the driver from Xetec without the Fish CD-ROM if
posible, and get the Fish Disk from HyperMedia instead. The Xetec package
I got had only up to Fish disk 360 and Ive heard nothing about an update
from Xetec, while HyperMedia disk I bought since goes up to disk 800 and
they have a subscription for future updated CD-ROMs.

other CDROM drivers, and I'd like to try theirs as well, as I've found
that so far each has driver has some good features.

I have EVERY commercial Amiga CDROM driver package available and I have to
say that the ASIMWARE CDROM driver package is the best of them all. I say
this because the ASIMWARE CDROM driver was the only one that could
correctly read ALL the CDROMs I have. Each of the available packages had
no trouble reading disks that were made specifically for the Amiga, but
when you start accessing ROMs made for MAC and MS-DOS you start to run
into problems. A good example is the KeyClipmaster CDROM for PC
Compatibles from Softkey ($29.95 from The Software Boutique in Austin,TX).
It is an ISO-9660 formatted disk and it contains 5000 TIFF images stored
two levels down in nested directories. So far the ONLY driver software
that could correctly read it was ASIMWARE. Canadian Prototypes CDROM-FS
had trouble reading the directory structure, XETEX couldn't access any of
the images at all and an "unnamed OS update" beta drivers would only allow
access to the root. ASIMWARE also reads Mac HFS formatted disks and
provides special icons to use to quickly switch between DATA and RESOURCE
forks. ASIMWARE's drivers also are the quickest to recognise disk inserts
and ejects as well as quickly recognise CDDA disks. All in all, it is the
best driver software I have found. If you have any questions, just ask.

AsimCDFS is at rev 1.1c, but Asim-Ware has just announced the upcoming
release of v 2.0.
2.0 will begin shipping August 5th, and includes the following:
AsimPhoto – reads Kodak PhotoCD images and exports 24bit IFF's.
AsimTunes – completely re-written
FishMarket – now contains Fish discs through 880
Preferences Editor – for all CDFS settings
Full ARexx support
Tested with the following CDROM Drives:

Remember, for ANY Amiga s/w to read the Kodak PhotoCD discs properly, you
must have a PhotoCD compatible CDRom Drive… which means a drive that can
read multi-session discs. (At least that's how I understand it) So
becareful when making a purchase decision on a CDRom Drive.

I doubt it… AsimWare developed it without licensing from Kodak.
I think that it should just be a firmware change for most drives (unless I
really misunderstand the nature of multisession). Now as to whether or
not vendors will make firmware upgrades available is another question…

With any drive that's CDROM-XA compatible, which is most of the newer drives,
you can always read the first recording session of a multi-session disc. A
local place quoted about $50 for a disc recorded with a 24-exposure roll of
film. If you had three-four rolls developed and burned into CDROM at once, you
can still use it on most drives, as the first session of multisession. If you
can't tell, there's a long discussion of Photo CD in my upcoming (third in a
series) article on CDROM in AmigaWorld.
John: Barging in here with a nagging and inconsequential question:
Most serious photogs burn lots of film, and typically discard most of
their frames. When a lab cuts a PhotoCD disc from a roll of processed
film, do they simply move the whole thing onto a disc? Ugh. What a waste.
I can see that it would be more efficient for the lab and I know the disc
can carry lots of images, but I'm not sure I'd want ALL my photos
preserved that way for a hundred years or so. Nor am I sure I want to pay
two bucks for each of those bad shots to be included.

I called Kodak and found a place in Milwaukee that could burn PhotoCD discs….
that's where my quote came from. It was about $50 for a 24-exposure roll, not
counting the initial developent costs for the roll. The PhotoCD includes a
contact print. Gee, it almost makes it look like Kodak is trying to find a way
to make more money, huh? 🙂 I'm not sure if you can tell them which frames
to burn. I bet you can, but maybe it costs more. Ah, here it is. I called
Reimer Photo at (414) 744-4471. They faxed a summary of the PhotoCD costs. It
didn't say anything about skipping images. Give them a call!
Thanks, John. Note that the AsimWare CD-ROM driver is now up to version
2.0 and will read PhotoCD discs on an Amiga equipped with a third-party
double-speed CD-ROM drive. It also will let you handle PhotoCD imagery via
other Amiga software that can read 24-bit IFFs. Good news!

Remeber… taht feature REQUIRES that you have a PhotoCD capable CDRom
Drive.
