There was a message here recently about WOC shows coming up this year. The
Sydney show was held from last Friday to Sunday. Having been to the
previous two, I felt this one was somewhat flat in comparison – lacking
excitement.
Seeing as how I was there for three days running our user group stand, my
flat mood may be more due to exhaustion than anything else.
A big disappointment was the non-appearance of a new Amiga which
advertisements had been plugging for awhile. At the last minute, the
launch was cancelled. As to what the "new" Amiga was, there is only
hearsay to go on. One source said it was a new CDTV, another said it was
to have been the 4000T. As both sources were Commodore employees, who
knows what to believe!
OpalVision boards kept wondering round tucked under people's arms – sold
quite a few. That's hardly surprising considering it originated in Sydney
and the Toaster is useless for the Australian PAL system. Unless I missed
something, the modules are not yet released – Real Soon Now. An
interesting thing was that when OpalVision were closed on Saturday, the
number of visitors to the show seemed to be down.
A1200s were really selling well along with quite a few 4000/030s.
A570s, CDRom drives, were selling for $180-00 and CDTVs were selling for
$380-00 by the last day.
Recent upgrades of popular programs which you may or may not be aware of
are: DOpus now 4.1
CanDo now 2.5
GPFax now 2.341
An external high density floppy drive was available which I hadn't heard
of before. It comes from the English people, Power Computing. CBM high
density drives are as scarce as hen's teeth here.
Virtual Reality machines had people lining up throughout the three days to
have a go – a nice little money earner.
Apart from that, the usuals were there. GVP had their big stand; Amazing
Computing were there selling latest issues at half the price we normally
have to pay in the newsagents. Microsoft put on more seminars than anyone
else and their topic was "latest developments in multimedia"!
An IBM Windows and Networking Show was on at the same time in the
exhibition hall next door. Quite a difference to wander from one to the
other. I don't think there was anyone not wearing a suit in the IBM show.
In the Amiga show, someone wearing a suit stood out like a sore thumb.
Overall impression, disappointing but then I couldn't afford to buy a 4000

It was my understanding that the OpalVision add-ons were to be released in
Sydney. It ain't so??

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings; the add-ons are still two months
away. They were demonstrated and it was quite impressive but commercial
release is still to come.

After reading your post on Centaur not releasing anything at the WOC I
called them. They now say they will be releasing the modules at the *next*
WOC in Sydney which is scheduled for August. Have you heard anything about
another WOC in Sydney?

The only WOC in Sydney is the annual one in July. I hope they don't mean
that one as it is a year away. I suspect someone got their shows mixed up.
Isn't the next one in the USA at Pasadena or something like that in
September? That would fit in more with a two month release date.
This has become like the original Toaster release – lots of publicity and
lots of waiting.
