XPR Bi Modem

Does anyone know of or tell me where I can find an XPR version of BI-Modem
for the Amiga? I have a BBS locally that has this as an option and I'd
like to use it for simultaenous up/down loading of files. Anyone know if
there is such a beast?

It's in the libs here as XPRBIM.LHA.

Ahem, someone needs to do some checking if that XPR bimodem is posted
here.
It is an altered version of XPR ZMODEM, it is not a bidirectional
protocol in the least and is not the same as the PC protocol of the same
name.

Do you know where I might be able to find a Bi Directional protocol for
use with the Amiga? I have "TWC" which does a 2 way chat & send/rec files,
but it requires that it be run on *Amigas only* at both ends. I am looking
for a way that I could use my 14.4k Supra to xfer & rec at the same time
from a local BBS in my area, as I transfer quite a few large Pic files in
both directions (the guy running it is a GFX artist I work with). I would
love to be able to set up all the files I need to send and receive and
then just leave the system to do the dirty work (it seems such a shame to
waste the perfectly good 14.4k backchannel by leaving it idle!) The BBS is
running on a 386/16 and it is called MAXIMUS. He has HS/Link and a few
other protocols available such as MobyTyrbo-Zmodem and some other obscure
ones I don't have. Is there a comprehensive listing of all the available
XPR protocols? Thanx for your time in advance! 🙂

I don't know of any XPR that's capable of bi-directional transfer. The
XPR standard wasn't really written to handle two-way transfers without an
awful lot of hacking.
There is a person working towards a 3.0 version of XPR that should make
bi-directional transfer a possibility, but then you're going to be up
against the fact that HS/Link and BIMODEM are proprietary protocols whose
authors have shown no inclination to publicize the mechanics of their
protocol.
I have a document on the Hydra protocol which is a publically documented
bi-directional protocol, but I'm not sure how popular it's gotten over on
the PC were it was developed. I've not seen any recent activity on it
either, but I still plan to go ahead and add it to Terminus eventually.
As for MobyTurbo, all that does is give ZMODEM slightly better
throughput, about 2% on average, by eliminating most of the escapes that
are performed on certain characters and character sequences in the data
stream. I contacted Chuck to get the ZMODEM-90 extensions, but he got
weird and went proprietary too.

Thanx for the quick reply Jack! I'm glad to hear that you will be
attempting to include a 2 way protocol in Terminus. I have to admit that I
am tempted to move to Terminus, but I have been held back from doing so
because of some featrues I have come to enjoy in the current shareware
terminal I am using from Australia called X-COMM. I recently downloaded
the demo version of Terminus and haven't had a chance to really check it
out yet, but so far it looks like the 2 of the X-COMM options I use
consistently are not available in Terminus. #1 is call rate settings to
allow me to keep a monetary counter in a corner to help me stay within my
long distance budget, and #2 is the lack of a 'macro panel' that allows
you to click on a displayed button to execute a macro. I use that all the
time to change settings on my Supra 14.4k modem. Also, I couldn't find an
option for External Emulations and I do like to make use of the XEM VT340
protocol. I have to admit that I haven't explored the docs nor have I
extensivly tested the program yet, but I do intend to. So far I am
*tempted* to give up X-COMM, but I haven't made that leap yet. 🙂

Call rate management is lacking, but it's something I plan to add in the
future once some of the higher priority features have been done.
As for macros; I went the route of using the function keys to assign
macros to so that the display isn't cluttered with something that might
obscure remote data or limit the number of lines in the display for people
that are unable to use overscan.
Also, regarding changing the settings on the Supra, Terminus supports 4
dialing prefixes that allows you to do that automatically, no need to
bother with macros to accomplish that.

I am almost certain that xprbimodem is available in Library 5 of
AmigaUser.

Jack Radigan seems to think that it is not truely a bi modem (it is a
modified Z modem) and therefore not able to do bi drectional transfers
which is what I am trying to find a way to do. Any other ideas?

Vernon, I really don't know. I just found the program on a local BBS,
noticed that it was not in our libraries, so I uploaded it. I had no way
to try it out.

Just try loading it in your comm program and looking at it's
configuration requester, it's the same as XPRZmodem. All they did was go
in and edit ZMODEM to say BIMODEM.
