Dear Hardaware,
I would like to know if anyone out there has documented a
switch from the original Amiga 2000 power supply to a PC-AT power supply.
I want to replace my burnt out supply with a PC supply and am not quite
sure about the TIC signal, which according to my manual can be bridged,
and the strength of the relevant voltages on the PC supply. I have read
the PC-XTP.lzh file in the libs here but I can't see how it can help me as
the A500 has no TIC signal from the supply and the XT supply is largely
different from the AT supply I have.

I wouldn't even try.
I think that there is a motherboard jumper for clock source that would let
you use vblank rather than powersupply TIC for the clock. I'm not sure
what else the A2000 uses TIC for, so you may really be SOL.

I'm not sure but I don't think that the line is used for anything else.
It has been a long time since I looked at that and the manuals are packed
up right now so I can't go look again.

Well as I _am_ going to try maybe you could tell me why I shouldn't. I
reconed that the TIC vs. VBLANK would probably upset the counters a bit
but who cares as the a2000 is a write off without a power supply. I could
always pay 200.- DM for a new supply 🙁 But what's the point if the Amiga
isn't even worth that much anymore? I could get an old a500 for that
price. The thing is that I'd only be using the amiga as a sort of terminal
and printer buffer.
Maybe you understand why I don't really mind a little UNORTHODOX patch
here or there. If it works it'll be better than now!

p.s. I have multimeters etc… no problems with soldering either.
I only meant that it's something I'd prefer not to do to one of my
machines. No rational reason. You, of course, are welcome to it 🙂

sorry for seem ing so sharp (i just re read my old message). I wanted to
ask if you know if it's possible in theory to get the right amount of
power out of a PC supply to run a blank 2000 on. Would I have to modify
the PC supply to get the reult I want?

In theory, should be no problem. Other than TIC, and connectors, I can't
think of anything at all different about the 2000 and any other power
supply. 5 volt and 12 volt is real standard, and any 150+ watt supply
should do.

Call Micro R&D at 800 527 8797 and get a nice 300 watt supply then load
the box with all kinds 'o stuff! Might be easier and less chancey than
adapting some salvaged ps.

hmmm… The problem isn't that I NEED a stronger or better supply than
before, it's just that I always had the amiga running along as a sort of
terminal which I could use when this computer (the one I'm using now) was
doing something else like AP or Graphics processing. The terminal amiga
then (one fine day) just puffed out a cloud of smoke and stopped working.
So now I have an amiga without a supply and with 512K of ram and naught
else (basicly worth nothing). If I can put the AT supply in I'll be
happy… if I can't I'll buy an a1200 in 3 months (hmm I'll do that anyway
I think). Ohh by the way I can't ring 800 numbers from Germany!
The amiga I have now is loaded… ('040, SCSI, AT-BUS, 13MB, etc..)
