OK, John, you've got me…..
I just heard about the new 'Indy' from Silicon Graphics. 100MHz R4000
based system w/16MBRAM, SCSI-II, 15" monitor, 8/24bit graphics, etc.
Suggested Retail: $4995.00
(Now, of course software, hard disk, etc. are going to cost more, but I
can see as to how this system will have a lot of high-end PC's running for
cover.)

The Indy sounds incredib! I don't know if you read my earlier post with specs
on an Indigo Extreme which ran about $35K. The Indy offers a heck of a lot of
performance at a seventh of the pric It can't be THAT muchupgrade to 64MB and
24-bit color. –Rick
That Indy system does sound pretty amazing for the price, eh?
(And to think, I just spent that much on Toaster stuff…)
Oh well, I have a feeling that this is going to cause a BIG shakedown in
the mini/workstation market. Six months from now, it's going to be _real_
interesting. Maye by then we'll be seeing the Alpha and PowerPC ased
systems too!

The Indy is nice, but gag, $1295 for a simple graphing package? The run of
the mill CAD program was $7449.

I'm not foolish enough to try to convert anyone here to Silicon Graphics.
(It's not like I'm going to run out and buy one.)
Sorry, next time I get some interesting news, I'll just keep it to my
self. (That's right, this is an Amiga SIG, where "it's my way, or the
highway…")

Oh, lighten up. He's just said the same thing we were talking about
before: Right now SGI software prices are too high.
With Indy around the corner, that's probably going to change.

$7000 for a 24 bit Card for the SGI's last time I spoke to the SGI Dealer
in NJ. That included a Encoder tho if I'm not mistaken.
There was another without an encoder for $2500 or so.
I wonder if the Indy supports 8 bit color at 2k*2k rez STOCK.
Yea Verily. I can't IMAGINE running IMAGINE on the SGI Indy. I want to try
tho hehehehehehehehehe. SGI is on the MOVE, all they need is some LOW Cost
software and things could get REALLY interesting for the Realm of 3D
animators. Last time I checked tho a 24 bit card for an SGI with NTSC
output was $7000.

The SGI Indy IS relatively Low Cost. I'm missing yer point here I think.
For some reason, I have a feeling that SG will be offering a 24 bit
solution that costs less than the cost of the original machine. :^)
(To upgrade a Quadra to 24bit color, you just add another bank of SIMMs.
And of course, the Quadra video chips will _automatically_ configure
itself on ANY Mac monitor from 13" to 21" in the maximum colors allowed by
RAM installed. So, there is a precedent for cheap/easy 24bit
upgrades…..)

We can hope for this from SGI. Wether it'l happen is anyones guess.
I'd love to get a Indy and 24 bit display/encoder
And use Xaos tools Pandemonium and Electrogig's 3D Go, but I digress.

I was looking through some of the junk mail that comes across my desk and guess
what I found…. A 24 bit board from Chryon called the "Centaur" board….
I got a good chuckle out of that, especially since it has the same logo as the
Amiga company! Don't know if it's for a Indy though… I'll dig it up and
see…
Thanx for the info. On August 10 I will be Asking ALOT of questions when I
see the SGI Indy Demoed. Now all I need is enuff $$$ to buy a Mercedes
190E and spend it on a Computer and software hehehehehe
Yeah, god forbid we should get caught even thinking about another platform
besides the Amiga! (So, how many "hail mary's" do I have to say to cleanse
my soul of these impure SGI thoughts? :^)

The base Indy has an 8 bit display and no hard disk.
It does have a 15 inch mmonitor and runs at 1024 x 768. It includes a video
camera (digital color), extremely high speed 2D graphics (1.4 million 10 pixel
lines/sec) and fairly fast polygons (26 thousand/second). It also comes with 16
megs of ram and a 100 mhz R4000 risc chip. It is a very impressive computer
from a very impressive company.
A 24 bit version with a hard disk is about $9500.
Better monitors offer 1280 x 1024 (8 or 24 bit) displays. Figure another $1500
or so for SGI's monitor upgrade.
The OS is IRIX 5.1 and Indigo Magic, which is a very nice mouse, window, point
and click user interface.
It supports RS232 & RS242. It is network ready. It has 16 bit audio, standard.
Audio digitizing is standard.
Video in is a digital format for IndyCam, S video and composite. Pal and NTSC
supported.
Video can be digitized directly to ram, in what appeared real time. I have
been told the rates can reach 30 fps, with enough ram. Video digitizing is a
standard feature.
Video out is an optional upgrade that cost about $4000. It gives video in and
out (composite and S). There are two composite in and
one S video in. IndyVideo has chroma and lunimence keying support. It is
similar to their
Galileo video card for the Indigo.

While (as I have repeatedly stated) it is still out of my price range, the
Indy represents a dramatic change in marketing for SG, and only bodes well
for the future of 3-D animation.
