#Imagine & A4000 !?!?

Hi,
When do you plan to fix Imagine so it runs on the Amiga 4000? I don't care
about HAM8 or any other AGA mode right now, I just want to run the program.

Imagine 2.0 should run fine on yer 4000. Ask Paul Gerhardt, he's been
doing so for quite some time now.

It crashes right away. I have a 4000/030, and was trying to run the integer
version. I called Impulse and they told me they had no plans to correct the
problem until the next version comes out this fall!!!
I have been using Impulse products since Silver! Then Turbo Silver, Imagine
1, 2… looks like it's time to look into Real 3D I guess.

PS: I also tried putting in a 68882 and running the FP version with no luck. I
don't run anything but a stock setup, so it's not related to any utility
software.
Troy, I've been using Imagine on a 4000 as long as the machine has been on the
market. The 4000/030 is a different animal. But I've never heard of Imagine's
integer version not running on it.
Could you tell me what version of the software you have and describe your
attempts to install it (both integer and FP) in more detail? –Rick Rodriguez
I have version 2.0. To install, I just copied the INT, DEMO, and OBJECTS disks
onto my hard drive in a directory I created called Imagine.
When I run Imagine, I get a guru #8000000B as soon as I double click the icon!
The title screen don't even appear!
The machine is a stock A4000/030 with 6 megs of ram, and a 120 meg HD. I don't
have any programs besides AREXX running, and tried to run Imagine right after I
start the computer.
I don't know what revision of 2.0 ir is because I can't get it to run.
When I called Impulse, the guy said he was aware of this and it will not be
corrected until 3.0 is out. It was a very short conversation because I called
during a Tornado warning or something and he had to make it quick 😉
I tried the FP version using a 882 I borrowed… It locks during the title
display.

AHAH!!!! I am not crazy or alone! I get the same exact error messages from
Imagine 2.0, though at varying times during running the program! I also get
the dreaded 8000 0004 error!
I don't have the A4000 030, but rather an A2000 with a zeus 040 33 mhz. I sent
a fax to impulse about this and have yet to receive any reply!!!
At least now I can tell my wife I'm not losing my mind…

I hope they fix it! I spent a lot of money with Impulse. I am seriously
thinking about switching. It's a shame, I like Imagine, but can't wait a couple
of months to finish a few things I started! Guess they are busy with the PC
version?

Given their promise of a version of Imagine for the SG systems, along with
Silicon Graphics announcement of a $5000 R4000 machine, I'd bet they're
concentrating on platforms besides the Amiga………

They are supposed to be busy with version 3.0 of both the pc and Amiga
versions… I hope that they correct several things with both versions!!
The PC version has gotta have dpmi support, I should be able to run it under
OS/2, which cannot be done now. This is also a problem with 3D Studio so I
can't be too hard on Impulse here….
It seems to me that Impulse is not very good at releasing software upgrades to
customers. Black Belt is always upgrading, but rarely do you see any kind of
update or bug fix from impulse. I own a bunch of Impulse programs and have yet
to see any bug fixes or upgrades…
James, Impulse is considering a new plan that should alleviate your concern
regarding the lack of incremental bug fixes and updates. It looks like Sept. 1
is a very solid release date for the 3.0 version of Imagine Amiga AND PC.
Impulse is very excited about the Indy as well and will be looking at it
shortly. In theory, at least, it should be able to run Imagine PC immediately.

You mentioned the fact that Imagine PC should be able to run on the SGI Indy
almost immediately, foolish me for not being up on the latest press releases,
but how is this possible?
PS – Imagine PC's ability to cleanly load some DXF files generated by a cad
program just netted me a new account, I am waaaay happy right now 🙂

Andrew, the SGI press releases claim that the Indy will run Mac and DOS
software through emulation and FASTER than on native machines. If that's the
case, Imagine PC should be able to run with some "minor" tweaking. I added the
quotes because I've found that with DOS and protected mode software, nothing is
"minor." –Rick
Andrew, the SGI Indy supposedly has the ability to emulate MACs and PC
Clones hence Ricks mention that the Indy should THEORETICALLY be able to
run Imagine almost immediately.
If they add dpmi support, it must be dpmi 1.0. If they use .9, it will not run
under OS/2 2.0. They will also need a license for the full dos extender (this
is very expensive)! The free one that comes with Watcom C386 won't work
properly (assuming they used Watcom). I know this all too well ;). Rational
DOS4GW seems to be the best, Pharlap is not dpmi complient.

If you're thinking of swithcing from Imagine you might want to have a look
at Real 3D version 2. I just switched over about a week ago and although I
found it REALLY hard to get used to the new system of modeling, it seems
to have a lot of promise. The speeds not too bad if you can do without
soft shdows and motion blur and the renders look MUCH better than I used
to get with Imagine. I'll be uploading a few pictures once I get the hang
of modeling with this thing. :^)
Jeff, once you feel more comfortable with Real 3D, I'd appreciate an honest
evaluation of the program. I tested it after NAB and found it completely
inappropriate for a production environment. –Rick Rodriguez
While I've still got a lot to learn about the program, I am starting to
get the hang of how to use it. Render quality is very good and working
with the privitives rather than polygons gets easier every day. So far my
only complaint is the speed and I knew what that was like when I bought
it. As for using it in a production enviroment, it may be a bit too slow
at this time but for me it's ideal since most of my rendering is stills
anyways.
When I get alittle more competent with it I'll upload some renderings with
render times and you can judge for yourself wether it's any good. ;^)
Take a look in area 10 of Amigaarts, I just uploaded a new batch of
Imagine models. Some of em are practically useless but a few gems are
their like ROOM>LHA
That's the one I want to see, I just have to get to the dealer and check it
out first.

I also get a GURU with my 040 accelerated A2000. Intermittant, doesn't happen
all the time, just enought to really piss me off because I'm right in the
middle of a project.

Yep, there is a problem here… I wont buy 3.0 if it's not fixed. Guess I need
to start spending some more time with my new lightwave toys….
Ahh, when I had an 040 in my 2000, I had those problems when switching
environments in Imagine. Had to disable CopyBack… Thats when I changed the
040 (Fusion 40) to a GVP 33mhz 030 board to solve the problem (and many
others).
Very Strange, you MIGHT try using an older version of Kickstart if it is
possible to load Kickstarts on yer 4000 also try an older version of WB.
Also ask Paul Gerhardt since he has been using Imagine 2.0 on his 4000 for
a while now.

I had NO problems with Imagine and my 4000. But then again mine is an
040 version not one of the new 030 ones.

Ahhh yes, that may well be the reason.
So much to render so little time
The only difference between the 030 and 040 A4000 is the small board that
contains the microprocessor. I know this because my mother board was replaced
once by the dealer, and once by Commodore. I asked the service guy and he told
me there is no difference.

Well then maybe it is the EC030 that is giving Imagine problems?
