This just demonstrates that the "GUI" is an imprecise term. It's more accurate
to refer to the Mac as having a "direct-manipulation" interface, which Windows
mostly does not.
I've been using interactive computer systems for almost thirty years, and I've
always had a mental model of the files and programs as "real" things I was
manipulating via the commands I was typing. When the Mac appeared, it seemed
like a layer of obfuscation had been _removed_ from the process. Windows,
unfortunately, still has aspects of an _additional_ layer separating me from
the "things" I'm really working with.

Yes… I think t way Bill Gates who suggested (correct me if I'm wrong) that
future apps will operate behind the scenes… users will manipulate the data
they want to in a little window… the app will operate almost invisibly until
s/he wishes to invoke a certain command.
Perhaps he has been looking at Claris Works for Macintosh. 🙂
