Does anyone know if Mystic River Software is still around?
They have a demo in the library here called Tiffit, dated 1990. It says they
sell a set of libraries to do CCITT Group 3 and 4 compression/decompression.
The number listed is answered by a fax, and I've sent them faxes with no
response….
I really need a way to decompress Group 4 images. And I don't really have time
to order the CCITT Blue Book and code it myself. But if I have to, I have to.
If anyone knows of a source for Group 4 stuff, PLEASE let me know!

If you have Internet access you could get tifflib by Sam Leffer (sp?) or the
PBMPlus libraries. I know the first has CCITT Group 3/4 code, the latter may
have it as well.
You can FTP tifflib at ftp.sgi.com. Can't remember the directory though.

I already have tifflib. Unfortunately there's a problem compiling the Group 3/4
stuff on the Mac. In vers 3.2 beta it even documents it, and turns it off in
the makefile.

I know, but I was sort of hoping that if you needed it enough you'd fix it :-).
The problem, as I remember is that the g3states.h file contains static data
declarations that exceed the 32K size limit. If you break those out and put
them into a resource, it _should_ work.
In any case, the algorithms presented in tifflib _do_ work on a wide variety of
systems, so it could at least be a good starting point.

But I don't have g3states.h! I only have the g3states.c file that generates it.
And -that- won't compile, so I can't generate the header to see what's going
on. Or maybe I just don't understand this kind of pre-processor skank as well
as I could. That's quite likely, actually…
Do you have a copy of g3states.h? That would get me over a very big hump….

Can do. I'll compile it on a Sun on Monday and send it to you. BTW, do have
an Internet address I could send it to? (not CIS's gateway, it limits message
sizes)

Thanks, Rob. One of the other folks here sent it to me already, though. I don't
have a "real" internet address, and the msg limit would be a hassle for you
anyway.
The file is simple, though long. I hope there's an easy way to Rez it into a
resource. Since I've never done more with Rez than go "yuck" and quickly turn
the page, I'll accept any pointers you might have.
Hmm… looking at the REz docs in ThC 6, maybe it won't be bad at all…sure
would hate to type and double-check all that data…

Glad you got hold of the g3states.h file.
My reaction to Rez was exactly the same as yours, maybe even a bit stronger
:-). It was that prospect of typing it all in that got me down.

P.S. If you do finally get g3states.h into a resource, could you please send

Yes, if I get it converted you are certainly welcome to a copy. And if there's
time I'll even try to make a contribution to the libtiff. It irks me to see
Macs given short shrift there (though, really, who is all that interested in
Group 4? Hardly anybody, including me….)
On the other hand, it may be easier to buy the tiffit libraries instead of
hacking around in this muck. I bet I can be just as lazy as you. |->

Well, it's not a Mac vs the world thing with regard to the tifflib stuff. More
like a "UNIX is best and everything else is for wimps" kind of thing. tifflib
has problems compliling on DOS as as well as the Mac.
Hmmm, seems a bit harsh there…Sam Leffer is a good guy, and he's conciensous
enough to answer questions and has even started a mailing list to handle
tifflib stuff. Not much traffic yet, but…
BTW, are you doing any more stuff for MacUser? And are you gonna be at the
MacWorld expo?

No, I didn't intend to be harsh – tifflib's rather a monumental piece of
work…
Of course, TIFF itself is "a real piece of work"… |->
No pending projects, though some vaguely discussed. Probably no MacWorld. I
have to get this Group 4 stuff (and the even larger mess it's part of) working
by the middle of August.
Just as well, I'd want to buy a Newton if they end up really being for sale
then…
