#HELP. VIDEO TAPE OUTPUT

I appreciate your VERY ACCURATE analogy of the Lexus and the Corolla. No one
could be expected to imagine what the other would be.
I intend to use a service bureau for making my tape, because otherwise my high
quality animations might seem like a 20 year old car (using your analogy).
Do you have recommendations for the type of tape to have made. A Betacam SP, a
SVHS, or what. I'm not even sure what a Betacam SP is. If I have a Betacam SP
made, do I also need the service bureau make the copies for me? I suppose that
I would need to ask each client what type tape they can view, and have tapes
made to order.
What would you do?

I just replied to Michele under this thread title regarding some suggestions.

You have to descide who you are going to market with this tape…. that will
descide on the format. For broadcast customers .. BetaSP (a high quality video
format used by broadcasters)… for others …. you will probably provide a
demo tape on VHS.
The thing is that it doesn't end at getting your animation to tape. A descent
demo tape will have sound as well. You can also save money on the animation
recording by fading between images using video techniqes rather than rendering
each frame in VP. This means getting someone with a video editing suite
involved possibly. You will pay A LOT MORE for a BetaSP editing suite per hour
.. than an SVHS suite.
My suggestion would be to find someone on the forum who has an S-VHS editing
suite and is familiar with animation recording to work with. They would be
able to work with you in laying out an effective tape.
If you can't find someone, I have a company that I work with (2 doors away) who
has an MII (just to confuse you further .. MII is a rival broadcast format to
BetaSP) editing suite who charges only $125/hr. They have a catalog of VHS
tapes that they produce and mfrg. so they also have a bank of VHS dupplicators.
That would be your last option … you'd want to try to do the editing with
someone local so that you can be there for descission making. If you post
where you are located someone might be within driving distance to work with
"lerking" on this thread. Otherwise you might post a new thread asking for
"Need Video editing in ??" .. see if yoiu get any bites.

Thanks for your help, again! Gary Yost recommended a company in San Francisco
that will output 1200 frames an hour for $200.00 per hour. That sounds
reasonable for a good tape. I have yet to call them. I am trying to decide
what animations to put on the tape. I'm about 2 hours from SFO. About 1/2
hour from San Jose.
And, as Michele said, my new animations will be better than my older ones, and
a new tape will be in order periodically. But that's what will help get me
started.
I believe you said you were an Autodesk dealer, or did I misunderstand? Where
is your dealership?

On the other side of the planet from you (in more way than one <g>). My office
is in Silver Spring, Maryland, which is a northern suburb of Washington, DC.
I'm in between Washington, DC and Baltimore .. about 30 min. from the center of
both (not a too bad place to be).
