Kurt McKeever and Christopher Ryan recently uploaded 9 new 3D
Studio images that will show you the level of quality that we
strive to achieve. Below is a quick description of each file
that we uploaded. Any questions, comments, suggestions, or

AMP1.GIF & AMP2.GIF
This is a fully detailed SONY Stereo amplifier. This image
stresses detail down to each button, light, and texture map.
This image shows our capability in photo-real product
prototypes. Every detail is a seperate object.
CDI1.GIF
This is a fully detailed PHILIPS CD Interactive Player. This
images stresses detail down to each button, light, and texture
map. Every detail is a seperate object.
CHIPSE.GIF & CHIPS1.GIF
This is a fully detailed PC Circuit Board. This images contains
many complex objects which are accurate down to every pin and
part number on each chip. Every detail is a seperate object.
BIGTV1.GIF & BIGTV2.GIF
This is a fully detailed MITSUBISHI Big Screen TV. This
television is detailed from the proper glass tube shininess to
the brush aluminum texture of the MITSUBISHI logo. Every detail
is a seperate object.
STREET.GIF & STRET1.GIF
This is a detailed street corner at night. This image contains
many complex objects, but mainly focuses on subtle lighting and
radiosity effects. Every detail is a seperate object.

Since when does one have radiosity available to them in 3DS?
Phil,
I admit I shouldn't use terminology that I'm not completely sure of the
definition.
I had read that 3DS does NOT have radiosity available. I had thought it was the
effect or "glow" that lights such as "neon" or "florescent" cast on objects. I
was
trying to describe the light effect of the neon sign in one of my recent
uploads called STREET.GIF. What is the definition of "radiosity"?
(radiosity is also not in my dictionary.)

This is most likely a simplified answer, but from the way I understand it (in
computer animation terms) , radiosity is a method of calculating the light
reflected off of objects, say light bouncing off of a table, to the wall and
the floor, then reflected back off of those all around the room, thereby giving
the rendering a much more realisitic look than a simple spotlight or omni
light. I'm no expert, but I've read an article or two on this and this is how I
understand it. I found a program some months ago somewhere called RAD386, which
supposedly was a radiosity program, but I have yet to try it. It appears to be
a work in progress the author left for someone else to finish. From what I
read, to run these type of calculations on a PC would make raytracing look like
greased lightining.
A good definition of radiosity is found in the book "3D COMPUTER
GRAPHICS -A USERS GUIDE FOR ARTISTS AND DESIGHNERS", Second Edition, by Andrew
S. Glassner, on Design Press, distributed by TAB BOOKS. It's a little involved
(radiosity), so, I won't go into it here. The book, however, is an excellent
source of information on all aspects of computer graphics, from a
non-technical, and non-mathematical basis, and gives you good, helpful insight
for creating images, as we do. If you can't find it in a bookstore, your local
library may have it (that's where I first found it). Highly reccomended.
Very impressive models Kurt (and Chris). I just downloaded the whole
bunch and they look excellent. I particularly like the street and the
chipboard.

Is Kurt getting you 24-bit versions of those images. If not, maybe he
can provide us with a set to bring down.

I'll be at Siggraph at least Tuesday and Wednesday, and certainly at the
3DS/Sony bash on Tuesday night. I may make it Sunday night for the forum
get-together, but that'll be a special trip. Now we need to see some motion
stuff from you, not just modeling.
