I can't imagine producing a (Broadcast ?) commercial using real-time flic playback/NTSC out to go to tape. Single frame is the only way to get acceptable quality as far as I know. You won't have to worry about speed, colors, screen tear, etc… . And you'll get 32bit alpha channel, field rendered output of unquestionable quality. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)

You really need to broaden your perspective. If an animation spec called for genlocking a colorcycled animation graphic over live video why would you insist upon frame accurate 24 bit rendering. Do you insist on a stretch limo to get to the airport because you just can't imagine taking a taxi? Maybe I just have a broader definition of animation. I do believe that whatever lands on tape be FCC legal (for broadcast) and the customer satisfied with the result. I do not insist that he pay for the highest, most expensive process I can offer if he doesn't require it.

You're absolutely right. I have two minds about broadcast quality, and one of them was out to lunch when I wrote that last message. As a matter of fact, I'm working on a client right now with the idea of doing 8-bit flics to genlock over live video, because it's a low budget commercial. On the other hand, the aesthetic difference between flic and 24 bit is soooo great in almost all instances, that I'd rather fight tooth and nail to get the 24 bit flavor (even as a producer: the unenviable position I have had the honor to assume). But for certain, specific jobs I totally agree with you. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)

John, one of the most difficult aspects of this work is having to do the 8 bit genlock thing for jobs that are really begging for 24 bit frame accuracy but the budget isn't there. If I'm slow and work like this comes in its really hard to hold to my rate card specs for an 8 bit job. I just finished a job yesterday that could have been done in 8 bit for a lot less money but the client wanted it to be 24 bit. The job was created entirely in animator pro and texture mapped to simple geometry in 3DS and with some colored lights we got a few suttle 24 bit highlights. The movement was a kind of tic-toc motion which certainly could have been Magni recorded without problem.
