#Still in outer space?

I am interested in 3d studio and I have been to several of your user group
meetings in Marin. I just have one question based on the observation that most
of the users are men…When are we going to see images that are less high tech
looking? I would really be interested to know if anyone out there is using 3d
studio to develop character animations or more creative, softer images. Am I
the only one that's getting tired of the same old space ships?
Come to Siggraph next week… we've got some very soft, very low-tech images in
the R3 demo reel. A medieval chapel, an old victorian house and attic, a
square-rigger, and an easter-island head for starters. All film-quality stuff!
And not one space-ship on the whole 30-minute reel.

I'd have to agree with you on that one. It's not that I don't think that anyone
should be doing the hi-tech stuff, far be it from me to tell anyone what not to
do (even if it does look like something more suitable to the side of a muscle
van than anywhere else <g>).
I think the biggest reasons that there's an over-abundance of robots and space
ships are:
-the combination of flat metal planes and realistic metal reflective highlights
make them a novelty that we haven't had access to before
-the first people attracted to new, complex technology (like 3DS and computers)
like to model (or draw or talk about) complex technology
I think that as more and more people begin to use computers (the holdouts),
there will be more people working in 3D animations and renderings who are
concerned with *content*, more than process.
There will always be spaceships, but think of it this way: the more people
buying 3DS to make them, the cheaper the software becomes for those who want
to make something else.
I now fully expect to be attacked by a squadron of "Verwillian attack Cruisers"
(in full 24-bit colour) for sullying their honour <g>.
Nancy:
Rachel Rosenthal makes some really nice soft images with 3DS.

Try 3D Artist Magazine. If you don't how to get it, try (505) 982-3532. You can
also reach her right here (CIS ID:71064,1654). And lastly, you can meet her
next week at Siggraph (among every other nut case who hang around here).
