#Problem w/ CDROM Extensi

Help! I have just bought a CDROM so I can use the nifty CD that came with
3ds but am having trouble. I have a Texel 3024 drive, Adaptec 1522
controller, Syquest removable 44 meg. It all works great with other apps.
but 3ds locks up on rendering. I've narrowed the problem down a little by
removing the MSCDEX driver from my autoexec file. Then 3ds runs but with
no CDROM access. I am also using the Trantor CDROM driver TSLCDR and
adaptec ASPI2DOS driver. This combo works for all apps. except 3ds. any
ideas? I'm confused….

Larry, you might try loading the drivers in a different order. What are you
using for a memory manager? You may want to try and exclude some memory
areas.

Two questions…
1) What kind of hard disk controller are you using? (or are you using the
Adaptec 1522 for your hard disk as well?)
2) How much memory do you have? (I'm trying to figure out if you're
creating a swap file when rendering.)

I'm not using the Adaptec 1522 for my hard disk. That item is IDE
controlled from my motherboard. The adaptec drives the Syquest and CDROM.
It does seem that the crash occurs as it is accessing the Syquest so maybe
it is a swap file problem. But what do you make of the fact that if I load
RIO, then unload it, then load 3ds everything works fine…Strange! Any
ideas?

Is 3DS set to make the swap file on your hard disk or on the Syquest? It's
suspicious that the problem happens when it accesses the Syquest, but I'm
doubting that you've got the Phar Lap -swapdir parameter set to your
removable media (that would be pretty unusual). Regarding Rio setting the
SCSI state differently… very strange. I've got no idea why that happens.

AT&T GSL's RIO uses Phar Lap 4.0 – I don't know how that might
affect its behavior with SCSI drives.

everything over to the latest version of Phar Lap and HighC right now…
it's a pretty huge job.

Thanks for the help. I ended up removing all hardware, adjusted switch
settings, changed interrupts and Base mem. settings for all cards,
reinstalled software, changed swap disk to C: and hey, guess what?
Everything is working. Well it took about forty hours but who cares. <G>
Time to get some sleep…
