Matthew, Our editors use LightWorks on seaQuest to take all of our LW animations and scale them to 24 fps. I think the output of LightWorks is horrible! It seems to really brighten up our imagery and wash it out…This is only used for rough edits however…everything is eventually edited D1. JG

Speaking of seaQuest DSV, I want to ask you a question: (I was going to ask lots of questions but the latest VTU asnwered most of them and raised 1 question) The CGI roster that is shown in VTU shows one guy called Eric Barba, my question is, how `old' is this guy? He looks like he is 15 yrs. old! If this is a youngster I am going to go and smash his hands (so he can't use the mouse) and then apply for the open position. You think this will work? :^) Now onto a more serious note. When the team was first assembled or when there is a new setting to make, how do/did you guys divide the work. Do some poeple simply model and others work on surfaces and others on motion, or does 1 artist work on the complete object? Is there only 1 person that does motion or is there more? I am working on a project which started out with my partner and me it has evolved into 5 people, 1 working on Logos/Credits another on Voice-overs/Music and another in the studio. That leaves Bill (partner) and me building all the objects and motions. I may u/l a frame from this up here. This is just a hobby for me so I was just curious how the BIG BOYS get the job done. <<< Tony D. Tracer >>>

Ha! Eric took a REALLY bad picture (I shouldn't talk..I was caught looking like I weigh about 200). He is about 26 or so. He was an Alias guy and is now using the Toaster almost exclusively. The way we divide the work varies.. We get a script and start R&Ding how we may do a few things. Any models needed are usually built by Eric, Richard, Greg and/or Kenny and then Tony, John Parentau and myself end up doing most of the animating and lighting. Of course this changes with what needs doing and all of us animate when we have a lot of shots (like in the pilot…(about 70 shots)) We all will work on one particualr shot individually, and only idf someone is having problems does the shot get 'passed off' to another animator. Also, everyone kind of develops certain skills that they are good at and we try to play to everyone's best abilities… JG

Howdy John just got the new issue of VTU and was thumbing thru it. I SEE YOU!!!! anyway on to the msg, have you seen the "Jurassic Collection" of 3D Models for Lightwave yet? they are Advertised in the new issue and are from the same folks that did the Nice Cathedral Model thats been in VTU classifieds for a few months now. The price was pretty decent too at $199.95 for 5 Dino models. My quesion is how's the quality of the models? Thanx

No, I haven't seen them yet, but the "call for information" at the bottom of the as hints to me that they haven't been completed/begun? yet and they want to see if there is a strong enough response… Could be wrong tho…. JG

Hi John, I read in a previous message that Eric used to use Alias, but now mainly used the Toaster. I work for a company that is looking at different 3D systems right now, we've allready purchased a Toaster 4000 and I love it, but someone else here is pushing towards Alias. Do you know what the basic differences are between Alias & Lightwave? Any thoughts would be appreciated… Eric Gooch

Eric says that LW is getting closer and closer to Alias, but he prefers to model in Alias if he can because of the b splines, etc. He is doing almost all of his modeling in LW however. He also says that he likes the fast feedback on surfaces, but he likes LW's interface for rendering better. JG

>He (Eric Barba) is about 26 or so. Man I have GOT to do `something' with my life!!! I am 28 and still driving a truck! Maybe if I get my demo tape finished and get a little agressive at the local Post-Production houses something may happen. Yeah, I'll probably get hit by a car and… (Mr. Sarcasm) >Also, everyone kind of develops certain skills that they are good at and >we try to play to everyone's best abilities… This sounds just like the way we are doing it, unfortunately our work won't look as good as yours but you never know. <<< Tony D.
