#Accelerators for 3000

Hi All – I have been trying to track down the PP&S Mercury accelerator for
my 3000 but no luck. I'm getting a Toaster 4000 to do some Lightwave
stuff and need a faster machine. Three questions.
1. Does anyone know anywhere I can get a Mercury?
2. Is the GVP accelerator for the 3000 any good? I've been avoiding it
because the mem is too expensive.
3. Is there any other accelerator for the 3000?

All I can say is I got the GVP A3000/040/28/2MB RAM, and I have never had
any problems with their tech support in the _many_ times I spoke with them
about the card.
The first one I got had a thermal problem that would cause the system to
lack-up. Finally, the 3rd time I sent the board in, they swapped it out
with a totally different board. It's worked flawlessly since then.
I would reservedly recommend the GVP accelerator. If your's is acting
funny, make sure they swap it out until you get one that works on _your_
machine. (Their company at least seems alot more stable than PP&S.)

Erik – What do you have in your 3000 besides the accelerator? A Toaster
4000? Anything else? I seem to remember that you needed to get an
upgraded power supply.

I had the old Toaster 2.0, 12MB RAM, 2 floppies, 50MB internal HD, and an
AMAXII+ all running on the stock PS. When I added a GVP
A3000/040/28MHz/2MB RAM, my PS croaked. I got a beefier one from Micro
R&D, and have had few problems since. (The Micro R&D PS is a cheap one w/o
much filtering, so I began to notice some flickering of the video display
during disk access, but it's never been a real problem.)

Erik – I'm going to be stuffing my 3000 with a Toaster 4000, Personal
Animation Recorder, TBC IV and the 500Mb hard disk for the PAR. I'll be
amazed if the power supply handles it – I'm probably going to have to get
a new power supply.
By the way, all you unaccelerated 3000 owners out there – I called PPS and
GVP, they have both discontinued thier 3000 accelerators. Bummer.

Thats really not much of a shock since the 3000 has also been discontinued
eh?
No, I didn't expect them to make the 3000 accelerators forever – only
until I bought one. 🙂

Actually, their discontinuation might just save you a bunch of money…when the
stock gets low, the prices will drop as they try to get that inventory out the
door…of course, you won't be able to get support, but hey…the money you'll
save…
Unfortunatly, no one seems to have ANY stock of ANY A3000 accelerator.
Ah, well. Looks like I may have to spring for a 4000T whenever that
appears.

I would _seriously_ recommend that you install the enhanced PS first if
you are going to be putting all of that into your 3000.
One thing I may have neglected to mention is that when my PS went, it took
the Toaster with it….Thank god NewTek fixed it under warranty, but you
might not get so lucky.

Thanks for the advice – I'm going to call my dealer and ask them to get me
a new PS.
