#Anim File Saving

I am having a very strange problem. I have a logo I would like to render to an animfile, specifically the Medium Res Overlay mode. The scene renders just fine when I use low res preview, but chokes on Med Res Preview or Overlay. It starts to render, then tells me: "Error Can't begin ANIM file saving. Abort rendering?" Does anyone have any ideas about what might be causing this? The manual makes no mention of any potential problems associated with this mode. Some specs: A4000 18MB RAM, Warp Engine 040/40, Toaster v3.1 software. Framestore directory is on the hard disk, not RAM. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. If I am unsuccessful at rendering this in med res, how do I overlay an anim onto an incoming video source? Grady

There is some sort of checking on whether the animation will contain too much motion to play back at med res. I think about 1/4 of the screen can change at once.

Grady, That message could very possibly mean that your hard drive does not have enough space to accommodate the finished anim file. I don't think the message you're seeing is related to the on-screen motion; that message will appear during a frame that contains too much motion for the anim rendering, and specifically tells you that there's too much motion… Jerry

With 96MB free on the drive in question, I find it hard to believe that space limitations could be at issue. I agree that it is not caused by too much motion either, since it occurs before the first frame begins to render, and the logo is not present in that frame. There is no camera movement at all, and I was careful to contain the size of the moving logo to a small portion of the screen. Thanks anyways… Grady

Grady, Is it possible that LightWave can't find the directory that it's supposed to save the anim to? Perhaps you should check and make sure it's set to save the anim to a directory that actually exists. I'm not sure if that's in the LightWave-config file or in the record menu though. Jeff H…

This may help… Double check your are rendering status, click on the Render button, check that you are in Automatic mode, and that ANIM save is not off. If ANIM save is off you have to reselect where you want to save the anim from the record menu. Also if may need to select from the camera menu, "use fewer segments". It may be that too much is in memory to allocate z-buffers or somethinhg of that sort. TRy goin into moddeller and unloading fonts, closeing down CG and PAINT, or getting rid of images you dont need. If all else fails, save the scene *(very important)* exit 3d, open up the GetSmall project, close down everything but 3d, and try again. Incedentaly, a small problem that may arise with med-res overlay anims. If you render too small of an overlay anim (2 or 3 frames), it'll error on you (CANT LOAD EFFECT) when you try to play it back via the switcher. Solution: Render at least 30 frames of the scene, even if all you need is two. It'll work. Just thought I'd throw that in there. I didn't have any problems with the memory, and no message concerning the Z-buffers. The only thing it told me was that it couldn't save the anim… Grady
