#Render speed ???

Hi Mike, I have a quick question for ya. If I scale down all abjects to make the world smaller, will this increase the rendering speed??? I am new to all this 3D stuff and don't quite know what is a normal speed for things. I started rendering an animation ( that dosen't seem to complex to me) Sunday night at 10:30 pm PDT and it is now 5:00 am PDT and it is up to frame 100 of a 300 frame animation. When I looked at things in the stage editor I realized that the world size was about 1,500 units and am woundering if this is the reason for such a slow rendering time. Or maybe it is normal I just don't know 🙂 Thanks in advance, Michael W. Towe Falcon Video Productions Santee Ca.

Michael, World size does not affect rendering time in scanline. I assume you are using scanline, if you can render 100 trace frames in 6 hours, then let us know your secret. Using more lights and textures increases rendering time. Also the number of faces will affect rendering time. Some folks reduce the number of faces for object parts that do not show or are far away. Another common trick is to render an entire scene and use that as a background for all frames, rendering only the object(s) that are moving around. As long as the camera is pretty still and the objects don't move too far away or closer, and you don't expect shadows (raytrace only) to look right or expect the background to obscure objects, well you get the picture. Anyway, I run a 66mhz Pentium with 16MB and moderately complex scanline frames take from 1-2 minutes to render. I would expect a 66mhz DX2 or A4000 to take roughly double that time more or less. Regards, Ed

Mike Well, the truth is that when the objects get smaller the rendering speed goes south, it goes slower, no faster. What type of computer do you have. Mike

Hi Mike, First off thanks for the quick response. I am using a 486 DX2/66 with 20 meg of RAM. I am rendering in trace mode since I love all the shadows. Regards, Michael W. Towe Falcon Video Productions Santee Ca.

Mike Everything you do such as refraction, reflection, shadows etc cost you time. I would like to see the scene and then I could give you a better idea of where the time is going. Mike

Hi Mike, Ok…. let me look in my WinCim docs and figure out how to do it, and then I will send it your way. Regards, Michael

You might try using the Dynamic Scaling Trick. Set your world size to 0,0,0 and Imagine will automatically size each frame to maximize rendering speed.
#85015From: Michael W. ToweJun 24, 1994 8:55 AM
Hi Peter, Yep…. I already found out about that trick. I think it just might be that this is a normal speed but I am so new to this stuff that I don't know it just yet 🙂 Regards, Michael W. Towe Falcon Vidoe Productions Santee Ca.

Raytracing Espescially when you have Alot of Mirrored and Transparent stuff in the scene is Sloooooooow

Hi Peter, Ya ever wonder why auto-sizing of the world is not Imagine's default setting? One of Imagine's little mysteries I guess. 😉 …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-
#85078From: Stan Kalisher (Impulse)Jun 25, 1994 8:59 AM
Peter and Paul It is not a mystery, it is indeed a default setting, the world comes in at 0,0,0 ie dynamic, so the mystery is what are you two talking about. Geez. Mike

Mike, This must be a recent (2.9-3.0 ?) change. I can remember discussions going way back about objects disappearing during rendering because they fell outside the world, and optimizing the world size for speed. I'm curious. Why would you then NOT want the world dynamically sized? Why do we need the option of manually adjusting the world size? …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Paul, Need, You dont have to do anything, just make a project and go. ON the other hand, if you are doing a scene that is very large and you only want to deal with a part at a time, you can LOCK out certain areas, also if you are doing a scene that is small and you know where the world coords are going to be, then you can decrease the render time by sizing the world yourself. The final reason is that we try not to FORCE you into the best senario, we give you the power to do as you will, sort of a Free will thing I guess. 8) Mike

Hi Mike, I uploaded a frame of the animation that is taking me forever to render. Unfortunatlt I didn't have any way of converting it to a JPEG or somthing else a little smaler so the file size is a little on the big side :-(. Any ways, it is the one with the real creative title "Room with oak table and tifany lamp" 🙂 Regards, Michael W. Towe Falcon Video Productions Santee Ca.

Don't feel bad Mike, I'm currently doing a Anim of a Bloke Preparing to "sacrifice" a young Lady. There's aLOT of Texture mapping in the scene, There's a Gray Stone (brick)Wall, a Set of "WEAVE"D Indigo Curtains,a Large OAK(wood) PLaque with a Silver Baphomet enclosed by a Golden Circlet both using the Metals Texture. The 2 "Actors" have no Texturing Thank God and the Ground has a Nice Crumpled Texture. At 736*482 Rez it is taking 42 minutes a frame on my A3000 25mhz 030/882 And I'm only using a Single "SUN" light When I used 3 Point Lighting the Rendering Times were even Worse! I just pumped the Ambient Light up to compensate. No Shadows either. Oops just realized I'm wrong the Antagonist has 3 Textures on him on his Knife 2 Metals,Blade and Hilt of Knife and the Crumpled Texture for the Wood Handle of the Knife

Thought never really crossed my mind Paul. How's the undersea renderings coming along?
#85151From: Paul GerhardtJun 26, 1994 4:44 PM
Peter, Things with "Sea Watch" are winding down for the summer. We'll start up again in the fall. I'll now have a little time to do a few things I've wanted to do for myself. Although first I've promissed Ivan Cockrum (He produces "Mystique" a MAC multimedia magazine for fans of the CD rom game "Myst".) an animation. BTW no more running on impulse power for me. I'm getting a "Warp Engine" for my 4000. 🙂 …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Congrats on the CD Job. Myst is also avail for the Clones isn't it? I'm working on an anim now of a Human Sacrifice. My Testing is using Biff Bod tho I may replace him with Tim Wilsons Cycleman done up in Black Robes or perhaps a Custom Model. Biff Bod just doesn't "FIT" the image of an Evil Sorcerer………. If you like I have a 320*200 Rez HAM Test anim completed. Relatively small, 250k or so Unarchived I can Upload it if yer interested in seeing it.

Peter, >Myst is also avail for the Clones isn't it? Yep, Myst is now available for the PC. A GREAT! game. I, of course, run it on my 4000 (Emplant 🙂 ). In fact I beta tested Mystique. Pretty cool, an using an Amiga to beta test a MAC application. …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Sounds Cool Paul, let me know how the Anim turns out for Myst
#85221From: jeff HolinskiJun 27, 1994 8:09 PM
Peter, Cycleman may be a bit of overkill for your sacrifice anim. You ever notice on the old movies the evil wizard often wears a loose robe like a monks robe? A few cylinders with bones should take care of the outfit and the only thing you'd have to add would be the hands and face. Of course with the hood the face wouldn't be very well lit so you could get get away with a pretty crude face to save render time. Don't forget to light from below for the evil look. :^) Jeff H…
#85295From: Peter GreciJun 28, 1994 5:32 PM
Funny ya should mention that Jeff, Last night I made a Blue Robed wizard. No Face just 2 RED Eyes and Ivory Colored Hands. Used 4 Sided Discs for the "EYES" but am unhappy with the result. I'm going to try 2 Red "PERFECT" Spheres now. I'll probbaly upload the Test anim with Biff Bod to Amigaarts tho

Peter, just a thought, but did you ever read Greg T.'s tutorial on making animated snake-goat eyes with Imagine ? I kept a thread of it from the Internet Imagine feed but I guess there is an explanation in GraphDev. This is what the evil wizard needs. He was using the Humanoid eyeballs.
#85365From: Peter GreciJun 29, 1994 5:58 PM
Snake Goat Eyes??? Huh? Greg T. ??? Would that be Greg Tsindillas from Long Island? Please do share the tutorial. Thanx
#85408From: Margaret CopelandJun 30, 1994 12:32 AM
Actually, you can go over to Graphdev and get it yourself. I'm pretty sure it is in the library as it accompanied a file he uploaded there. I guess he is doing Imagine PC support there – so maybe you could chat it up. I guess you can get the eyes to move like a snake/goat's and follow the camera – plenty creepy, eh ?

Paul I might suggest that before you get the WARP engine you take a look at the Pentium processor based systems. I recently read an article by Brent malnak regarding the Raptor and it appears that it took 3.5 minutes to render this terrible image in AV video. I did the same rotten image in IMagine and it took 34 seconds on a 90 MHZ pentium. Cost for the computer was under 1600.00. Take a look, Imagine screams on this platform. ANd the cost is very low. Mike

Mike, Thanks for the concern and info. I am getting a VERY good price on this from my dealer (in return for helping him set up an Emplant system and representing him at a local show). With a buyer for my old 040 board this upgrade will come in for about $350! But more importantly I need more than a rendering speed increase. I am moving SLOWLY toward a SCSI II based nonlinear video system. "Movie Maker" & my DCTV if I need to go cheap, or V-Lab Motion if I can afford it. The Warp Engine gives me a little acceleration, memory expansion, and FAST SCSI II while using no zorro slots. Of course I just hope the Amiga and those companies are still around when I am ready! I can always move to another platform later. BTW are you guys still considering a native Power PC port? 😉 …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Hi Paul, I just thought I would put somthing in here. You mentioned looking into a desktop video system so I thou ght I would recomend one. I use a Video Machine from Fast Electronics. The non-linear side of things are planing to be released this fall and it looks real good. All real time effects no rendering transitions and A/B rolls from 1 drive. Regards, Michael W. Michael, Thanks for the information. Can you give us more? Is this an Amiga or PC product. Does it use your system's HD controller or does it need a dedicated HD? Can it digitize incoming video realtime without a TBC and/or what kind of display specs does it have? Sorry for all the questions, but I am interested in all developments in this area. …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Hi Paul, >>> Thanks for the information. Can you give us more? Is this an Amiga or PC product.<<< It is available for both the PC and MAC in the linear form right now. And will be available for those platforms as a non-linear editor this fall. >>> Does it use your system's HD controller or does it need a dedicated HD?<<< It will have its own controller ( Called a "Digital Player/Recorder or DP/R) and will have it's own dedicated HD's. But you will also be able to mix and match both digital and tape source. >>> Can it digitize incoming video realtime without a TBC and/or what kind of display specs does it have?<<< Yes….It will use Motion JPEG compression with software definable compression rate. You won't need TBC's as fas as I know since all fotage will be run throught Video Machines switcher wich has the TBC's built in. I don't have the display specs off hand, but if you look in the Multimedia Vendor B forum under the FAST ELECTRONICS library. There is press release on the DP/R there. Also while you are there, stop by the FAST forum and say hi. Regards, Michael W. Towe Falcon Video Productions Santee Ca.
