Gee, I have all of those and more, except baldness <g>. Seriously.
BILL
what are the "more".
please explain
ARA, welcome to 3DS group therapy!! (See Msg. #109403) — James — MAP —
i had not seen that. <GGG>
by the way do you relate in any way to the above message. are there any othe
syndroms that you suffer from????
ara
I have most of the symptoms you listed. A few months ago we were talking about
dreaming of wireframe meshes in the few moments of sleep we get. And then
there is that dream I had about the RXP, but that is another story. 🙂

>>dreaming of wireframe meshes in the few moments of sleep we get<<
the scary thing is that the nightmares about wireframes start after one wakes
up, facing the real thing!!wooooohahahhh >;-[
??????RXP??????? hey i am all ears for a new story?

Well, everyone on ASOFT is probably sick of hearing me plug the RXP. This was
the only wishlist contribution I made. But since I would never pass up an
opportunity to keep this "dream" alive . . .
In the dream, I was using 3DS. I was creating something in the Materials
Editor when I noticed a button situated in-line with the other shaders (Flat,
G, Phong, Metal). This button had the word "External" on it. I clicked on it
and a list of external shaders appeared in the same way the list if PXPs or
IXPs appear. Listed in the box was Ray-trace, Fur, etc. Then I woke up in a
cold sweat.
Upon thinking about it, I realized this would be a powerful tool, as one could
selectively apply the renderer external procedure, hence RXP, to a material
selectively just as can be done with Flat, Phong, or Metal. This way, it would
be up to the user to decide the appropriatness of using the material given the
potential for renderer slow-down.
There you have it.

Your suggestion is nothing new to the rendering world: Renderman is a fully
programmable scan-line renderer, with third party shaders available and
everything. It's too bad IPAS doesn't touch the renderer (yet?).
John Tissavary (LUNA cie)
it will for sure!<G>
soon i hope?
ara
Funny you should mention that, as I suspect it is where the dream originated.
I was aware of Renderman before I knew about 3DS. I never had the money or
contacts to play with Rman so when I heard about this app on the PC that
utilized Rman technology, I jumped on it with both feet. I was immediately
infatuated with 3DS R2, but I was surprised that no option was made for
external Rman shaders.
In the two years I have attended Siggraph, I have seen little or no recognition
for desktop work, which is clearly deserving in attention. Some of the
"recognition" I have seen for the SGI goes to "Joe Programmer" in his work
"Weird Stuff" because of the custom shader he wrote.
Now is the time for desktop animators. I think you hear me knocking and I
think I am coming in. I have two words for you: Desktop and 3D Studio. (said
in the tone of Dennis Leary).

LOVE IT.
GREAT IDEA.
i hope the people upstairs are listening!
i also had a wish list item that i sent to gary a while ago. i hope they
incorporate both of these.
my idea was to have an object level material editing:
in 3deditor, in the modify object/face/element section there will be a material
option. once you clik on modufy material you are prompted to click on an
object/element/face. upon clicking the mat editor screen comes up and at this
stage whatever adjustments you make to the material only effects the particular
entity(face/element/object).
you also have the option of saving the new settings as a material or loading a
material. but the edited mateial will only effect the chosen entity. let say if
you have a blue metalic material in your lib. that has been assigned to several
objects in the scene and you want to change the shade of only one of the
objects/face… then you click
on the entity using modify materil and only change that entities properties.
leaving the rest of the objects unchanged. also this will eliminate a lot of
mouse clicking when editing materials in the scene no more get mat./put mat/
autoput/ etc in the mat editor.
i think this will be a very productive tool.
well there is my story object/face/element level mat editing.
in any case i love your idea.
take care

Ara,
I like your idea. The only problem I see is that the Mat. Editor takes up so
much screen realistate. Your idea could be implemented by having a "Load
Material" option in the 3D Editor. This way, if you want to modify a material
on an object, you could choose "Load Material" somewhere from the Modify menu.
This would call the Mat. Editor and preload it with the material from that
object. After making adjustments, a "Return and Save" option would be handy.

i think we are basically talking about the same thing. the idea is to modify a
face/element/object's mat. properties at an entity level rater than material
level.
i hope they implement this. i have been asking for it for the last year.
take care

I think and dream of animation projects and how to model things, I have even
caught myself breaking things down into geometric shapes as I look at them. One
time I jumped out of bed and ran to fire up the computers before the spark of
an idea went out (about 4:30AM). Do you think there is ANY hope for me??
Funny you should bring this up awhile ago at school I compaired my desire to do
computer animation to an addiction." I need more hardware to support my habit."
<BG>
>> Do you think there is ANY hope for me?? <<
Nope. You have chosen your path and are lost forever in the throes of
poligonal desire. (Do not say that at church! 😉
How bad can it get?? I remember one day I attempted to open the locked door of
my car. Immediately, I heard my thoughts echo "Modify Object Attributes". I
knew then that I was a goner.
