I just bought Vista Pro 3.0 a few weeks back for an animation project where I needed a background image of Pikes Peak in Colorado. It worked great. What would be my deal for an upgrade? I also work for an AutoDesk dealer and we may be interested in VistaPro for our customers. Let me know.

Rich, The 3.1 upgrade is the PC software, but you can use all the DEM files (except the session files) on the Amiga. There is a special up/cross grade price for Amiga Vistapro owners. I'll make sure Clint sees you message and emails you the info… John.

Rich: Are you an Amiga owner? There wasn't a VistaPro 2.0 released on the PC. There are upgrades available for both 1.0 and 3.0 owners. I will email you the info. Clint <VRLI>

PMJI, Clint As a Dealer I've got the VistaPro 3.04 (accourding to our pink slip enclosed witht the software) and I'm wondering if this is the latest version? I thought John was working on a more 3D Studio cross/compatible version? I also see that we didn't send in our regristration card…Hmmmmm I guess that was because we thought we were registered as a Dealer. Any feedback on this? Thanks Murph'

James, We made the Vistapro 3.1 product announcment here a few days ago; maybe it's already scrolled off. 3.1 has Save DXF to save the landscape (but not the trees, fractal detail, etc), Save Texture Map, and a program that translates 3DS VUE files into Vistapro scripts (to sync the two programs). It is available now on CD-ROM (with thousands of landscapes) and will be avialable shortly in floppy disk (without the landscapes). I'm sure Clint will send you more information and the pricing… John.

John: I think James should talk with Valerie regarding prices, as the numbers that I have are end user prices, and not dealer numbers. Clint <VRLI>

>> trees, fractal detail, etc), Save Texture Map, and a program that >> translates 3DS VUE files into Vistapro scripts (to sync the two programs). That sounds very interesting. Can you give an example of how you would use it? Would you be rendering the backgrounds in Vistapro and render objects (Houses, planes, cars, …) in 3DS (minus the backgrounds) and then combine the two frames into a single one?

David, That's right, you would use Vistapro to render the backgrounds scenes and then 3DS to render the foreground objects. A crude list of steps: 1) Save landscape as DXF from Vistapro. 2) Load DXF landscape into 3DS, use it as a matte. Set up the rest of the scene and the camera path. Save the Camera motions as a VUE file from the key framer. 3) Use VUE2SCR.EXE to convert the VUE file to a Vistapro script. 4) Render the backgrounds with Vistapro using the translated script. 5) Use the Vistapro generated images as backgrounds for the rest of the rendering with 3DS. The matte landscape gives 3DS the ability to determine when objects should dissappear behind the background landscape image. This doesn't work as well as rendering the entire landscape with 3DS would but a typical Vistapro rendering consists of a few million 3D polygons. (I have done scenes with 150 million!) Because of the way 3DS works it would be overwhelmed with that much data. If you don't need all the fractal detail that Vistapro adds to the landscape you can use Vistapro's "save texturemap" function to create an image that can be mapped onto the DXF landscape instead of using it as a matte. John.

For the floppy version, VistaPro 3.05 is currently the latest, though it will shortly (30 days?) be 3.10 when they get the manuals updated. The CD-ROM version is 3.10, which has DXF support. It's always safest to send in the reg card, making the assumption that the person who keeps up the database is organized may be making reality a little _too_ virtual. <grin> You might want to give Valerie a call and see what's up. She can be reached through the switchboard at (805) 545-8515.
