#FLAT-BED SCAN. & 17"

ANYONE,
I am considering buying either an EPSON GT6500 or EPSON GT8000 A4 flat-bed
scanner for my system which consists of an Amiga1200 with Maxtor 250Mb
hard drive and MICROBOTICS M1230XA 50mhz accelerator + 8Mb 32bit ram and
50mhz 68882 co-processor & 1960 monitor
What I would like to know has anybody had any unresolvable problems or
just problems fitting and running these scanners with the AGA Amigas? Are
they a good buy and is the quality of the output worth the price?
I have the COLOURPIC+ video digitiser which works with my A500+ but does
not work with my 1200 and is virtually useless now. I would hate to buy a
flat scanner and discover the same applied.
In addition is the 17" MICROVITEC Cub-scan .27dpi 29-82Khz horiz.scan a
good buy for the 1200? By that I mean is the image provided a rock-steady
one in Hi-res interlace and without huge chunks being ripped out of the
left-side screen in some of the available modes?

Iain, for the 1200 you need something that will sync down to 15KHz. The
only 17" I know of that will do that is the Idek 5017, which sells for
about $950 from several Amiga mailorder houses. I think Electrohome also
makes one, but I'm not familiar with them.

I'll have to check that monitor out just to see if it's available here in
Scotland or down in England.
That price you quoted ($950) would equate to roughly L620 (pounds) here
which is quite a good price. A 17" monitor (Microvitec Cub-scan), which
would only scan to 29-82khz, advertised via mail order was priced at L890
($1374). I'd really prefer a monitor that worked totally with my Amiga1200
so I can see myself importing from the USA.
What is the dpi resolution of that IDEK 5017? And can you give me a phone
or fax number from a reputable company supplying it?

Iain, the stated resolution is 1024×768, but I've used 1152×900 with no
apparent problems. Here's some mailorder places that at least advertise
it. I got mine from Creative Computers, and have had no problems that
were not satisfactorily resolved.

Try to disable any option on your 1200 (.68030/50/50) . I once had something
like this wit ha accellerated a4000 and digiview. After disabling anything we
could find, digiview did work.

I'm not sure how to "disable any option" on my A1200. I take it you mean
to disable the fast ram? Or remove the accelerator completely from my
system. It would not be practical to do the latter but I suppose I could
adjust the startup sequence to deny recognition of the accelerator. But
that's a bit heavy to me as I need the fast ram if I'm doing high
resolution video digitising.
Still, I'll mess about a bit and see what happens but it may better to buy
the new VIDI 24bit colour digitiser as, so far as I have been able to
ascertain, the people behind COLOURPIC.PLUS have not kept up with
developments and provided upgrades to their video digitisers for AGA
users. A great pity as it was a good unit.

Depending on what you intend to scan, you may find 10Mb of total memory
not enough for 24-bit scanning. You will almost certainly need Gigamem,
whihc means having an accelerator with an MMU and making sure that it is
compatible with Gigamem. Alternatively, buy the ImageFX software, which
comes with an excellent Epson scanner module, and can also cach data to
disk without the need of an MMU.
17in monitors look best in 1024 by 768 pixels. At 720 by 550 pixels or
even at 800 by 600 pixels, everything appears a bit chunky on 17in
monitors.

Actually I find 1120×740 a good compromise between chewing up chip mem,
good desktop size and retaining the original 640×400 aspect ratio. You
need to create your own monitor specs for this though.
For paint programs something like 800×540 works better, so you can
actually see the pixels 🙂

I ordered the GT-8000 flat bed scanner late Friday and it arrived Saturday
morning. It's big isn't it, very nice looking. Actually at the moment all
I can do is look at it as the supplied ASDG scanning software did not
arrive with it and won't arrive until late next week.
Presently it sits covered and with a large model of a KLINGON battle
cruiser on top … this is to deter the cats from lying on it which is
just the thing they would do. When I opened the box up they were in there
before I was.
I have a 10meg A1200 machine and was not a little stunned, Jeff to read
you say that this would not be enough for 24bit scanning. As I understand
it GIGAMEM needs an entirely clear partition to cache data too? My
partitions all contain material so I'll have to think of a way around that
one. If it came to the crunch I could buy an additional IDE drive and
stick it into the machine but the A1200 is so limited in it's
expandability that I guess that idea is out. My present drive is a 250Mb
as well.
How much total memory would you recommend for full 800dpi 24bit scanning?
I suppose I could get hold of 16meg for the M1230XA accelerator if needs
be now. I really dislike the idea of having such a device as this on my
desk which I cannot fully use. I already have a COLOURPIC.PLUS video
digitiser which does not work on my 1200. Mind you are you saying this
only applies to a full A4 page? I'd only be scanning in various
photographs which would not be A4 in size.
How large is a 24bit file? My intention was to compress them onto floppies
OK for sending to printers.
You refer to ImageFX, the SILICA shop in Glasgow has that program. The
software supplied and for which I await delivery is the ASDG scanning
software. Is the ImageFX better, or are they about the same? I'm intending
to buy image processing sofware in the near future anyway and the toss is
between the ASDG or ImageFX software; so I'm very much open to advice.
The 17" may have to wait if I'm needing to get more computer memory or I'm
unable to get the GIGAMEM option working. Still I would like to have 17",
I'm sure I could have a lot of fun using it.
