#A3000 Motherboard Avail?

Jim,
No luck with the IC's, but I finally thought to swap the HD, and it
worked! It took the better part of a day bootstrapping my olde A3000 (its
older than 2.0 ROMs – it boots kickstart from it's HD). Fortunately I maintain
a tape drive backup of all my partitions. I now have a rather expensive
paperweight (Quantum 210MB drive). Oh well… it's better than doing a
motherboard swap. It would have been nice if the repair technician had
considered this whne I brought it in for repairs, but that's what you get when
you have things repaired by a guy that prides himself on not
"over-repairing"!!!!!!!!!
It's nice to have my A3000 back (not to mention all those eps and
postscript font files). Now if/when PageStream ever gets finished, I'll have
something to try it out on!!!! Having recently purchased QuarkXpress I'll
REALLY be able to see if PgS compares as favorably as Soft-Logik hopes!!!

Good to hear you're back up & running. I know what you mean about
those old kicking 3000's. I've got one too. You should talk to Quantum
about that drive, they should be able to fix it. I think you can send it
back yourself, or have a dealer do it.
BTW, Speaking of Quark… I used to be an Amiga dealer (another story) One
of my customers had 3 weekly newspapers. They swore by Pgs, and prefered
it over Quark or Pagemaker. He's nervous about CBM, and wants to go to the
PowerPC platform. Can't say I blame him. I suppose I'll have to convert
the CANDO deck I wrote to manage their classifieds over to Visual Basic 🙂

Wait till they get a load of PGS 3.0. It will blow your socks off, after
demolishing your shoes … Believe you me, it will be worth the wait.
This is no overhaul, it's a brand new animal but a familiar one.

I'm sure they'll be impressed, if they haven't migrated to the PowerPC by
then. At the very least, they'll want it to help port their documents out
to the new platform. He probably knows more about the features of 3.0 than
I, he's always speaking to Softlogic about it….

How long does Quantum's warrantee last? My 210MB drive is 4 years
old…
As far as Quark vs PageStream, I find PgS to be MUCH easier to use (the
interface IMHO is more intuitive than Xpress). Then again I have been using
PgS for years thru numerous version upgrades. Xpress might more powerful for
professionals with more diverse needs than myself, and Quark has a larger
professional installed base with a large number of Xtension programs (although
they are relatively over-priced). I hope that PgS 3.0 lives up to the hype.
Soft-Logik has already billed my credit card for the upgrade, so I hope to be
able to evaluate 3.0 soon.
Unfortunately the current situation surrounding the Amiga makes it
necessary to insure a "backup" platform for my computer needs. I really regret
having to depend on the likes of MicroSoft, but "thems the breaks". Thinking
about giving up the flexibility of ARexx hooks, for a bulky and kludgy thing
like MS's OLE contraption gives me indigestion! Oh well…

I think Quantum has a 2 year warranty. It's been a long time since I
sent one back for out-of-warranty repair, but I seem to remember that the
rates were reasonable.
