I tried your suggestion and it still don't work. The behavior of the signal is
different in the two cases, though…
I was watching a television plugged into the modulator simultaneously.
When I switch on the Amiga and the VGA monitor is already on, the TV shows a
scramble of lines with a diagonal bias. When I switch the the Amiga on
*before* the monitor, and wait for booting, the screen shows a black band
vertically down the middle.
(BTW, I was wrong when I said that the signal switches the monitor off approx.
3 seconds after booting – it happens almost immediately.)

Don't we all but who's holding their breath? I'd have thought that the only
people who cared enough to take over the machine and DEVELOP it properly would
be a consortium/syndicate of established Amiga developers and programmers.

A new development! ->->->
I was feeling in an experimental mood, so I tried an 100ohm and a 360ohm
resitor on the HSync line. The 100ohm didn't do anything, but the 360ohm now
lets me boot the Amiga OK so long as the monitor is switched on *afterwards*,
just as you suggested. It still won't work if the monitor is ON during booting
though…
Now I am tempted to try the whole adaptor circuit. BTW, if anyone is
interested in it, I have uploaded it here, as Ami2VGA.lbm. Has anyone actually
tried the thing?
Thanks

Sounds like you just need buffering on the HSYNC and/or VSYNC lines…
The adapter should do this.
The C= adapter has a CD74HCT08E to do this.
I built one of these adapters for a CGA monitor once.

Thanks for all the suggestions Bob,
They sound just about right!
