#SCSI Problems!!

I have a problem with my Quantum 240 Mb HD on my Amiga 3000 – it gives
read/write errors on blocks, yet when I got into HDTools and verify the drive
blocks, it says everything's fine. I'd enter the bad block numbers into the
HDtools, but AmigaDos gives me a number like 224090, and HDtools wants to now
cylinder number, bytes from index, etc.
What gives? Is there any way to enter the bad blocks I can do easily?
Any info on similar problems would be greatly appreciated.

Go into HDToolbox and validate the drive.

Did that. It says that there are no bad blocks. Tried reformatting using the
low-leval SCSI command – 5 seconds of gronking. Then, reformatted using
AmigaDos. Restored the contents using Quarterback: got 4 error messages saying
various blocks were bad.
Validate didn't seem to work.
Then it sounds like you have another problem.
Could be poor termination. Could be a few other things, though not
likely.
Is the motherboard terminated? Is the 240meg Quantum terminated? Is the
Quantum internal or external? Do you have any other internal or external
devices? Do you know which rev WD SCSI controller you have? Which DMAC
and RAMSEY? Do you have an acccelerator, or is it a stock A3000? How much
RAM do you have? Does MBRTest-2 run fine overnight on this machine?

Yup, it was the termination…. I had two devices with terminating resistors,
but nothing seemed to happen until the weather got warmer.

Termination is so damn wierd and results in such strange symptoms that I'm
not suprised the weather seemed to change it. The phase of the moon seems
to matter, too. 🙂

You haven't installed any new SCSI devices lately have you. These type of
problems can be caused by improper termination. If not I would try some
of the Disk Repair programs out there.
Do you have the program DiskSalv? You can find it in the AmigaUser
Librarys as DKSALV2.LHA. If this program can not help, you better call
Quantum Tech. (1-800-826-8022) and hope you still have a warranty.
Also, using the program ReOrg, I have found that it will take care of
small disk errors not to mention speed things up. It is a lot quicker
than formatting and complete re-writing a drive.
Random read/write errors can mean impending doom.. So back up what you
can.

Hmmm, I have a tape backup system, so that's no biggie. But…. I'll have to
check on the terminationn. I did add the tape backup about seven months ago…
This is probably the best lead I've had so far.
Thanks for the tip. I'll take the case off this weekend and let you know if
that solved anything.
Now, if somebody can just tell me why my HD relabeled itself Wanagi-Wachipi a
while back…. 🙂 <it did happen, BTW>
Yup, it was the terminating resistors…two devices had them, and everythign
works now only the last device has them.
Don't know why things didn't screw up earlier…

If the termination is correct, and everything attached to the bus is within
spec, and if the cabling is not too long, it will always work.
If anything is not up to snuff, it may or may not work.
If it doesn't work, it will always be at the most inconvenient time.
