#PAL CDs on NTSC TV

I just bought a few British magazines with CD32 discs. Of course,
these are PAL format, so I can't see the bottom of the screens on my NTSC
TV. Is there any trick to fix this (aside from buying a European model
TV)? Or have I just learned a lesson about the international electronics
market?

Plug an Amiga mouse into the second joypad socket and hold down both buttons
while booting the machine. You will get a screen allowing you to change the
boot & display options. (this trick also works on an A1200). Select display
options, and change the mode to PAL. You may also need to change height of the
TV picture itself (there should be a knob round the back somewhere!).
BTW – A European (ie PAL) TV will definitely not work!

With the power off, plug a mouse into the other port. When you turn the
CD32's power on (or press the reset button), hold down BOTH mouse buttons.
This with give you the pre-boot screen. Select:
– the DISPLAY OPTIONS,
– then select PAL as the display type,
– then USE
– finally select BOOT.
This will make the screen higher centered on a NTSC MONITOR and the
animations should run an the proper speed (25 fps). But I don't believe
all (if many) NTSC TVs can handle the PAL (50Hz) scan rate. You may have
to adjust the TV/Monitor's horizonal HOLD.

If you are running an A1200 or an A4000 you can boot the machine in PAL
mode by holding the left and right mouse buttons down during boot and
selecting PAL in display options, or if not, you can use Degrader (found
here in the libraries) to fool your machine into thinking it is in PAL
mode.
