Does anyone know a good place to pick up single-speed SCSI CD-ROM drives
cheap? Asking for a friend who needs internal (no external) and who
prefers new for about $100 (unless used price is signifcantly less than
new price). We've seen new external units for about $100, but they were
top-loaders that couldn't be put into an existing case (to save space).

I heard Creative has a SCSI model they are selling for 90 bucks.

The portable top-load units are being dumped right now by everyone. The
internals are still in demand for the reason you sight. You can get a NEC
CDR-84 Multispin (NEC recertified) for $179.00 from JEM Computers. (617)
497-2500 For an additional $20 you can get the Multi-session version of
the same.

I'm at JEM. I'm disappointed to hear that you have "JEM's stuff in front of
me" and can't figure out if it's single speed or double speed. The only single
speed we have is the model 36M (sells at $99), which is what 150K transfer
means. The double speeds are the models 38, 84, 84-1, 74, and 74-1, which is
what 300K transfer means. Please call us (617-497-2500) or fax us

tohear that there was confusion. I welcome your suggestion as to how we might
communicate better.

I had a "Current Inventory" sheet which indicated access time and transker
rate. I should have enough of a brain to translate 300k to 2x, but I
don't 🙂
I wish we could get the rest of the industry to always use reasoanble
numbers in specs, but if you get used to seeing CD-ROM drives spec'd as
1x, 2x, etc., then you expect to see 1x, 2x etc. next to the more
technical specs. So if you'd squeeze that in on your inventory sheet,
it'd be helpful.
BTW, is the 36M top-loading, or could it be made internal?

Thanks for your suggestion (re 1x, 2x, 3x, etc). We'll incorporate that
immediately into our materials. [You must be in advertising]
Re the 36M, it's an external portable unit that is top-loading. We don't know
of an easy way to use it as an internal. I suppose, however, if you tear it
apart enough … and if you know what you're doing ….. [you get the
picture] …

I'm in engineering, not advertising, which is why I was embarassed to be
more familiar with 1x/2x notation for CD-ROM drive speeds than with access
time notation. 🙂

What do you get? Do you send a monthly flyer? I have bought four of
the NEC CDR 74-1 and have received nothing… ( Well, yes I did get the
drives…..)
By the way, the drives are behaving well. It's great getting externals
for only $20 more than internals..

Stay away from AmigaWorld, shop the Electronic Mall free in CIS.
I got a great price on a 500MB Quantum through a store here that
no advertiser in a magzine could beat (at that time 🙂 ).
1 X CD-ROMS are cheap these days maybe you can find a good one
for what your friend wants to pay there. Remember the Electronic
Mall is free.
