Is there a way to do it in 3DS (or some other package) without having to go frame by frame?

Chris, << Is there a way to do it in 3DS (or some other package) without having to go frame by frame.. >> The other alternative would be real time capture. Using products like the PAR/MAX, you are able to digitize video images in real time and then use the resultant files as animated texture maps, animated backgrounds, etc.

how do you mask a charactor and drop out the background doing it this way.

Photoshop's or Photostyler magic wand function works very well. I am doing a stop motion video in which I have to replace the background. I only wish this programs implemented a "batch" or script mode like DeBabelizer to make it easy for us animators to deal with this type of problem. A related problem is this. I have hundreds of frames (already rendered and or video captured) in which a color or 2 need adjustment throughout (batch mode please!). The workaround is to change one file lowering the saturation or whatever, then creating a paletted file, then using Alchemy and -f(forcing the palette) of all frames to that particular file.

Do you know if the "magic wand" is just an edge detection program or does it do something else? Does anyone know what edge detection algorithem it might use?

The "magic wand" does not detect edges, as far as I know. It detects colors that you tell it to detect. John Tissavary (LUNA cie)

The wand detects a difference in HSV based on the set threshold. An edge occurs because of that difference so although it is not an "edge detector" it can be used the same way.

HSV, right, I should have mentioned the whole sweet. Photostyler and Fractal have similar "magic wands". John Tissavary (LUNA cie)

The Amiga has a great batch language called AREXX and most all programs support it. Programs like Art Dept. Pro and Image Master on the Amiga do Photoshop type operations and support AREXX. You need batch operations for video/animation work and Photoshop being geared toward print is sorely lacking.

PMJI Daystar Digital (404-967-2077) has a program called Photomatic which records macros which can be played back and applied to as many files as are in a folder. It's in most Mac catalogs: e.g. MacWarehouse, TigerSoftware, etc. About $100-200. The only shortcoming I'd like to see addressed is 1). the inability to convert file format when saving and 2). changing a file's name upon saving.
