James, I just tried 640x480x16. I can alt-esc from the shaper/lofter/editor/keyframer just fine but I can't alt-esc from the materials editor. By the way, my render desplay is set to 320x200x256 and I can also alt-esc just fine. It is very interesting to me that I previously had a setup with where I could ONLY alt-esc from the materials editor and now that is the only place that I can not toggle from. I am configured for 640x480x256 in the materials editor. It would be great to toggle from all 5 so I don't have to remember not to be in the materials editor. Again, as I told you before, on the same cpu I used to be able to alt-esc only from the materials editor… which by chance … the lowest resolution is 640x480x256. Interesting? <BTW> I am sending my message from another cpu. My true idea of multitasking <g>. Oh well, I don't have cold feet yet. Regarding the Cntrl-Alt-Esc, I try it every time but it does not work, only a RESET is valid. Oops the power button works also. <g> Thanks again for your help. Stephen

Stephen, Glad to hear you have it working. I have the same trouble with the mat-editor because of the 256 color svga mode. But, like I said, I just use the 16 color vga setup for background rendering so I never need to switch to/from the mat-editer. I just start the rendering from the Keyframer or VP, switch to the desktop, and go about other business. When I do editing and keyframing, I have use a high-color/rez 3ds.set which precludes clean switching to/from the desktop. But that is no big deal, I just need the background rendering ability. Have you tried setting up some serious background rendering? Once you do, you will be hooked!! — James E. Coulter — Mindscape Animation Productions —

James, I seem to have an interesting problem. When ever I "TRY" to render in the background by typing alt-esc to toggle to another application, when I come back I am in the same place as when I toggled out of 3ds. This seems like windows 3.0. I'm sure there is a setting that I need to adjust, but I don't know which one it is. Stephen

Stephen, I render to NULL as I am always outputting to the PAR or some TGA files. If an app tries to switch video modes OS/2 may suspend it. Rendering to NULL ensures that the display mode stays in VGA with the "fuel gage" indicator on the screen. Also, do you have the BACKGROUND setting set to "ON" in your 3DS object (icon) on the desktop? BTW, when I was first setting this up, I used the Pulse program in the Productivity folder to see if 3DS was tapping my CPU. Turning background execution on and off for your 3DS session should show a marked difference in the CPU activity graph. If it does not, then 3DS has been suspended in the background for some reason. You may find this helpful. We will get this working yet!! — James E. Coulter — Mindscape Animation Productions —

Have you put a /BGEXEC parameter on the end of the Device=vsvga.sys line in CONFIG.SYS? What video card/chipset/os2 driver are you using? My understanding is that some vendor os/2 video drivers don't support background graphics. FWIW, the latest Vibrant drivers includes a "null" driver – no graphics/no background execution problem (for background slave rendering.) LAM
