#Imagine and Pentium 90
9 messages in this thread
I am curious what speed increase can be realized by going to Imagine for the PC
and the Pentium 90 ? How much faster would this setup be than my 040 33mhz
Amiga ? How much faster is the Pentium 90 than the 486 dx50 ? How about the
Pentium 66, how much faster is it than the 486 50 or the 040 33 ?
Any comments would be appreciated, this will help determine my Imagine upgrade
path.
I have an Amiga 2000 w/ Fusion 40 68040 @25MHz. I recently leased a 90 MHz
EISA PC for rendering. In my initial tests, I used an old logo animation and
rendered it on both machines. Frames rendering in 3:55 on the Amiga rendered
in 0:29 on the PC.
Jim,
Thanks for the reply. That is an incredible performance difference. Is the PC
version of Imagine optimized for Pentium use or is the pentium really that far
ahead of the 040 ? That is a shocking result.
My concern with moving to the Pentium as my rendering platform, I'll still
model on the amiga, is that things like Essence will no longer work. Of course
with the kind of performance you mention above I may be able to live without
those textures…
Yah, going from Amigas to PCs can be frustrating. Even tho the PC is much
faster, I still like the Amigas better. Things like being able to just pop to
the Workbench to create a directory to store the neat object you just created,
or jump into DPaint and fix a brush map, or copy some files from the CDROM to
hard disk so it doesn't take as long to load, or watch the render on the
Firecracker and see that, 20% into the render, it's messed up….. Lots of
those things.
Re: Essence, it would make sense for those folks to port to the PC, since
there's a bigger market there, maybe you should bug them about it.
<butting in> The reason the interface seems better for Imagine on the Amiga,
is because they didn't bother to change it much when they ported it. The stuff
about using specific ALT-keys, and calling directories drawers, and so
on-drives PC users nuts. Of course, you can change it in preferences, but you
shouldn't have to. Most of us (and it sounds like you use a PC now too?) would
wish for something similar to a combination of Imagine's power, and Truespace's
interface. AD
Actually, I was an Amiga user before the IBM, so I was happy that the IBM
interface mimics the Amiga. I was actually quite impressed with the fidelity
of the port.
Jim,
Until Apex ports Essence to the PC, you could use Forge to create bitmaps of
your Essence textures, and apply _those_ to your objects. The resulting scene
would render on PC or Amiga, and would render faster to boot.
Blaq!
Charles,
I have heard about Forge!, have you actually tried it ? I wonder what the
output looks like.
As my own test I rendered some fairly complex scenes from a warehouse
walthrough I have been working on. The scenes on the 040 33 Amiga took 32
minutes each, on a 486 50mhz PC 23 minutes, and on the Pentium 90 they screamed
through in only 8 minutes each. That's a pretty healthy difference, especially
since the final animation will have over 1800 frames in it…
Anyone know how the new 060 boards will compare to the pentium ?
an 060 board when first released will probably cost nearly the same as a
Complete Pentium System. This is assuming a Low end Pentiun for $2000
