We would like to use vbplay.vbx in a demo that would be widely distributed, but for which we would charge nothing. Does the licensing agreement require royalties in such a case?

"We would like to use vbplay.vbx in a demo that would be widely distributed, but for which we would charge nothing. Does the licensing agreement require royalties in such a case?" No fees. The only time you run into royalties is when you use our Windows Player which does NOT have the startup Autodesk screen. This requires contacting our legal department, and paying $1 per copy for each intended distribution. You then get a copy of the program which does not show Autodesk's name.

>> No fees. The only time you run into royalties is when you use our Windows Player which does NOT have the startup Autodesk screen. << Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE ABOUT THIS? Check Brian's response. The reason I ask is that the .vbx requires the aaplay.dll in order to run. It's my understanding, and the reason I signed a license agreement, that aaplay.dll must be licensed if you're selling an app that contains it. – Tim Hitchings Visual FX Software Written 12-Jul-1994 @ 18:38:50 EST Using: Windows NavCIS PRO 1.21

"Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE ABOUT THIS?" Tim, Brian and I have passed the buck to our legal dept, who said that they will have to have a couple of weeks but will come up with a definitive doc as a guideline. I have never seen a written policy about this but have talked to past owners of the job of distributing the version of our Windows player which doesn't have the startup screen.

Tim, Anything we would say would only be informed opinion. When it comes to licensing, every case is unique. Please call Gail Bennet in our Legal dept. 415-332-2344. -Brian
