Hi John, > I'll re-state my earlier question. I customized CFileDialog by adding > a new list box. How do I "wake up" the list box so that when I add > items to it, they show up on the screen? This isn't happening now. > When I Dump'd the dialog, it said this list box was "detached." If this listbox is a control type data member of your customized derived CFileDialog and you're calling AddString() to add items, then you'll need to call UpdateData(FALSE) to initialize the control. Hope this information helps! Brian Ku -Microsoft Developer Support

Thanks! Now I'm looking for an example of a status window… a modeless dialog that gets updated while other processing takes place. (Some of the processing will be happening within DLLs.) I've made a class for this dialog, but I haven't found a clear example of how to tap the message pump periodically to check if the "cancel" button on this dialog has been pressed. As a side issue in my search, I've found some examples in MDN Level 2 discs, but they don't directly load into Visual C++ 32-bit under WinNT, and I've tried to adapt them, but they don't work. How can I indentify which older examples will work with the latest MFC and VC? I think some of these examples have indications that Programmer's Workbench v1.x was involved with their creation.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "tap the message pump … check if the 'cancel' …has been pressed." You're modeless dialog box could handle this message, and in the handler you would post a message back to the app. > As a side issue in my search, I've found some examples in MDN Level 2 > discs, but they don't directly load into Visual C++ 32-bit under > WinNT, and I've tried to adapt them, but they don't work. Yes, some samples may date back to MFC 1.0 which shipped with C/C++ 7.0, that used the MSDOS version of the Workbench. I would imagine most of these samples contains a readme.txt/abstract which may describe the versions. However, I think the .MAK file will tell you more.
